We are retired and considering locations to spend July and August away from the heat of Arizona. Would appreciate suggestions for beach areas in Costa Rica where we could rent a house or condo. We don't speak much Spanish. We understand thet there are areas popular with Americans such as ourselves.

Hello Art Z:

There are many terrific areas for all budgets. I'd stay away from the Northern Pacific Coast (Guanacaste province). They are experiencing water quantity and water quality issues.

On the Central Pacific, check out Los Suenos Resort & Marina. It has all the amenities of a North American resort..back-up electricity, safe drinking water, championship golf (par-72), tennis, 12 restaurants, two spas, shops, international marina, beach club.

Jaco is a surf town that is quickly being transformed by the construction of many North American-style condos. Given that supply is outpacing demand, you can likely get a good deal on a rental of 30-90 days. Jaco has grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, nightlife, nice beach.

Hermosa Palms is a gated community 10 minutes south of Jaco. Rumor has it that Tom Brady (New England Patriots quarterback) and his girlfriend Giselle just purchased a place there. You can probably rent a 3-bedroom villa for $2500 per month or so if you rent for 2 or more months.

We may be able to help you with a mid-term or long-term rental. Visit us at http://www.meadbrown.com

There are a lot of options but I agree with the above post - northern Pacific will be pricier. You might consider Dominical on the central pacific coast. Nice beach town. Here is a list of quite a few vacation rentals: Costa Rica vacation rentals . Hope this helps.

Do you want to live near the city with moderate weather and access to grocery stores and malls and other americans? Or do you want to be on the beach where it is more human but more of a latin feel?
