Wondering about safety/hostility towards Westerners (esp women) in Jordan
16 years ago, July 11th 2007 No: 1 Msg: #16372
Hello, I'm looking to travel to Jordan (Amma, Petra, Dead Sea, Aqaba) in August, and wanted to know how safe it is--I've gotten a lot of reassurances from my friends who are from there, but then I read the US State Department page on Jordan, and it kind of freaked me out. Does anyone have first-hand accounts of travelling as a Westerner or a woman in Jordan? Any tips and/or impressions are welcome! Reply to this

hi!
Are you traveling with a group or alon????
do you know anyone in Jordan?
It is safe in jordan to a level if you are a man it is safer 😊
Going on safari trips alon not recommended.
keep a close eye on your wallet lol everyone will try to make some extra cash from you.
best way is to plan your trip know how much everything cost. and look for deals. contacting a tour agency directly in Jordan might save you some money but then not all of them are good ones.
you can check this site for more information:

I am a female from Chicago. I went on a trip to Jordan in January with a group. It is a very safe country as long as you dress with respect to your surroundings (i.e. no halter tops, short shorts, short skirts). Otherwise dressing in travel gear is okay. It will be hot in August, so loose white clothing will keep you cool. You may be glanced at if you are by yourself, but only out of curiosity. There are crowds at Petra, Dead Sea and Aqaba, so you won't be standing out if you don't call attention to yourself. You don't have to worry about pickpockets or anything like that. As far as the wallet comment, there are lots of streetside merchants who want you to buy their stuff; if you don't want it, just say "no, thank you". They are used to that and they won't harass you. They will invite you into their shops, and if you want to go in, go ahead, there is no danger. Jordan is a tad expensive, I thought, not a good exchange rate with my US dollar. Don't buy Dead Sea products at the Dead Sea, wait till you get to Aqaba, it will be much cheaper and they sell the same products. At Petra, there are Bedouin children and women all over selling jewelry and other little things: just say no thank you again if you don't want t buy. It's a fabuous country; I loved my trip. I've been a few places in the Middle East and this is a good trip. As far as Amman goes, it's the new Beirut, they are investing a lot of money into tourism and building a great many new modern hotels. I stayed at a moderately priced one, and the service was very nice. Also, Wadi Rum is a must see! Have a great time!

PS The only complaint I had was with the airline: I had to buy another Visa (for 10 dinar) when I had a 12 hour layover because the airline didn't tell me that I had to mention that I was a "transit" customer. But it did not ruin my otherwise memorable trip in a beautiful country. Reply to this

Hostility - i did not come across any hostility at all. So long as you behave appropriately you shouldn't have any problems. Don't do anything you wouldn't do at home safety wise. Same as anywhere. I didn't get any inappropriate behaviour (in contrast to some other places I have visited!) Reply to this

To be honest, I've spent my vacation in Aqaba on the beach, near the beach or inside the water! My accommodation was near the beach. I got the room from <snip> which did not cost me as much as I expected. So, I enjoyed exploring the underwater by doing some scuba diving, got a nice tan and that was pretty much it!

If you are a beach lover like me, you will surely love Aqaba as well. <snip> gave me an accommodation that gave me an instant access with the resorts in there. You should really try diving in the Gulf of Aqaba, you will be amazed how rich their marine resources are, and their coral reefs are great. The Tala Bay in Aqaba will surely give you a good sight of the city, a picturesque view.
