I need some mundane information about things like laundry, B & Bs, etc.

Hello everyone,

I'm essentially a newbie traveller and am planning to be in Ireland (Eire) during the second and third week of September 2007. My cousin will be travelling with me and we'll be driving a rental car and staying at B & Bs. (We're Canadians so, if you're on the roads in Ireland during that period of time, please watch out for us. We'll be trying very hard, but we may be a bit dangerous if we forget to stay on the left side of the road.)

We need to know whether Ireland has things like laundrymats, where we can wash our clothes in coin operated machines. Knowing whether we can wash our clothes will influence how heavy we have to pack.

Also, I've never stayed at a B & B and I'm concerned about going out in the evening. Do we have to be in by a curfew or will our hosts likely give us a key to use?

I've been told that we should plan to find a B & B by about 3 or 4 p.m. Is this correct?

I'd also like to know if I should be packing an alarm clock or will most B & B hosts give a knock on the bedroom door if we ask them to?

Fifth question -- has anyone used one of the geneology centres I've seen information about on the web? Are they helpful? Will they find records while a person waits or is it a matter of telling them what you know and waiting until you get home for them to send you what they've been able to find out? Are their services expensive?

Is it fairly easy to find an internet cafe? I'm thinking about finding B & Bs...will I need to get a printed listing and, if so, does anyone have any suggestions about where I can beg, borrow or buy one?

Last question (for now) -- will shops, pubs, restaurants, etc. take travellors' cheques or should we plan to hunt up a bank to get cash every couple of days?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out with some answers.

Peggy

Ireland has everything that Canada has and the same rules for B&B's etc generally apply everywhere. Travelers cheques are generally an acceptable form of payment but you can change them up in most banks but I would use your ATM cards to access money. Most of the B&B's will give you a key if you come back late but if you're looking at accommodation, I've stayed in a few apartments before and they were very good. Try this company for a start Dublin apartments

You'll also find many internet cafes across the whole of the country.

Thanks so much for the information, James. It's good to hear I'll be able to wash my socks along the way.

We'll be moving around by car, staying in a different spot each night so the apartment idea won't work for us, but I appreciate the thought. I've never stayed in a B&B anywhere...hence my questions about them.

I think using an ATM card would be much easier than dealing with traveller's cheques, but someone told me the service charges for a withdrawal from a bank in Canada would be pretty steep. Do you know anything about that? Here in Canada, I pay $1.50 each time I use a bank machine other than my bank's. If the service charge was in that neighbourhood, I wouldn't worry about traveller's cheques at all.
