I'm getting ready to travel to Guatemala with another female and we are wondering how important taking the malaria medication is? We have both already received the shots necessary (i.e. hepA, hepB, yellow fever, tetnis) and would like to not have to take the malaria medicine unless its absolutely necessary. | I'd like to hear some responses from people currently in Guatemala or have recently travelled. We will be there during the rainy season if that makes any difference (June 19th-July 3rd). Thanks for your words of advice! The malarial danger is in Peten, not the highlands, but you can minimize it there by staying in Flores and visiting Tikal in the day. See travmed.com for more info, but the malarial mosquitoes generally only bite around dawn or dusk. The word for this in English, Portuguese or Spanish is "crepuscular" | You still should use DEET, because of the small incidence of Dengue Fever anywhere. These bite in the daytime, but again, Flores is unlikely to have any. palmetto Mark Hayward Post Count: 9 Msg: #3 439 days ago, June 26th 2007 | Greetings - | Do they have cerebral malaria in Guatemala...? If yes, the medication is absolutely worth it!! When I lived in Papua New Guinea I saw many people (mostly very young & old) succumb to this illness and it is not a pretty way to pass. palmetto MyTropicalEscape Providing organic relief for the common cubicle.
