I am looking for a western European country to move to with my family| 24 Replies: « back 1 2 next » | atjlopez Anthony Lopez Post Count: 3 Msg: #1 510 days ago, May 19th 2007 | In the next year or two my wife and I are planning to move to Europe with our two children. I am looking for some advice on which cities, countries our more family friendly. I am also wondering if the cost of living is affordable as compared to the US. Currently we live in California, own a house and have two jobs. I know this is a very general question but any help would be appreciated. | Thanks rose_1171 rose s Post Count: 6 Msg: #2 510 days ago, May 20th 2007 | Depends a lot on your money situation. Id say the best place to live in Eu is probably UK. but again.. its too costly sometimes esp if your in london or sth. | Why not consider Germany.. Germnay has followin advantages (1) economy is good (2) cheaper than California! (3) property market in germany is rising so you may be able to invest in teh long term in germany and lead a good life! hope that help Rose [Edited: 14:25 - Jo Trouble - url removed] Redfax1 Sean Redfearn Post Count: 1 Msg: #3 481 days ago, June 18th 2007 | Hi | I moved to Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain a year ago, and do not regret it, its cheap, thriving, cheap property fuerteventura property, and fantastic weather all year round. Sincerely, its the best thing I ever did, I was used to the hassle of living and working in central London, now all that is a distant memory. Soooo happy. In my opinion it's the best region there is. Here you have a site http://www.jcyl.es/ with all the details about this region (including economy, business and laws if you are interested in starting your own firm or to invest), and all the cities in it. I love Salamanca, Segovia and Valladolid. So, anyhow, why do you want to move out of USA? sexytraveler Klaudia Koronel Post Count: 1 Msg: #5 480 days ago, June 19th 2007 | Im planning to go to Erope. Currently I am learning Spanish with the plan that my family also learns also. I am interested in living in Spain for a couple of years and then moving back to the US in time for my children to start highschool. | La pomme d Eve La Parisienne Post Count: 18 Msg: #8 475 days ago, June 24th 2007 | Spain is relatively cheap IF you avoid the big cities and there are an abundance of Interantional/bilingual schools (beware, some are better than others). Travel opportunities to the rest of Europe are good too. France is also an excellent choice- I love it here. The same applies regarding the school and travel opportunities and cost of living is reasonable except in Paris! Saying that Paris is an amazing cultural experience for your children and schooling is good. If you are thinking of France, avoid the Cote d'Azur whichis very expensive and over comercial. Italy is child friendly but cost of living is rising. The Uk is an easy option and personally, if you are crossing continents, I would choose somewhere speaking a different languqge so that your children can return fluent and have experienced biculturalism. In that case, Spanish may be more useful as a world language, California being so close to Central and South AmericaWhat an opportunity! | [Edited: 17:31 - La pomme d Eve - spelling and addition] puggy1018 Lisa Post Count: 6 Msg: #9 474 days ago, June 25th 2007 | Hi La pomme, | Where in France is it affordable to live about 30 mins from Paris? I know Spanish and English. Do you think it would be easy for me to learn French? And if I were to live there, where would I be able to work if I'm not fluent in french? Thanks for your help.... Post Count: 12 Msg: #10 474 days ago, June 25th 2007 | Hello atjlopez, | If you decided that Spain would be the best place for you and your family to move in, I can help you with some information regarding some Spanish language courses in Spain, offered by Nido Language Travel. They arrange everything, from the papers needed to take the language classes till the place for you to stay, in case you're a student and you want just to finish your school there. Near Marne la Vallee, Mareil Marly, Poissy, Le Pecq etc if you have a look at a map of the Ile de France and les Yvelines. All are on the RER route to central Paris. Job wise, if you are English mother tongue there is opportunity for Teaching English as a Foreign language and there are also Spanish lesson providers in central Paris, if you are Spanish. Try googling CFILC, Atelier 9 or Cervantes Institute if looking for Spanish opportunities or look at Dave's ESL Cafe if English. FUSAC have an excellent publication with jobs. Of course, it helps immensely if you can speak French but once living here there are loads of opportunities for reasonably priced lessons to get up to scratch quickly. Good luck. | tedandjane Ted and Jane Post Count: 13 Msg: #12 465 days ago, July 4th 2007 | I would certainly say Amsterdam. There are so many things to do in Amsterdam. Museums, galleries and concert halls give the city a great reputation for entertainment and culture. The restaurants, cafes and coffee shops are renowned, and the traffic-free centre makes it perfect for children. | Read more here: Amsterdam Review shortstax shortstax Post Count: 4 Msg: #13 464 days ago, July 5th 2007 | YES amsterdam! Thanks for the overwhelming number of responses. My wife and I have not decided where we would like to live yet. We have given some thought to London because the transition would be easier but I hear that the weather can be rather gloomy. My family is currently, but slowly, trying to learn Spanish so I think that Spain is maybe a more appealing posibility. The move is only temporary probably lasting 2 years. Thanks again for everyone's input it has been very informative. piksychick piksychick Post Count: 6 Msg: #20 411 days ago, August 27th 2007 | Anthony | Have you looked into the Canary Islands?
