Two of us are headed to Bangkok on May 18 and will be there til May 23. We're wondering where will be better to stay - Khao San or Sukhumvit - cos the reviews and suggestions so far have been confusing to say the least. Some say Khao San's better for the sightseeing, but no Skytrains or buses and some say Sukhumvit's better for the Skytrains but suck sightseeing wise.
We'd rather ask people who've just been there than read reviews written ages after people returned home, so hope anyone who's been there can give us suggestions.
Plus, is there anywhere near enough (hour or two from Bkk) for us to sightsee on daytrips? We're on REALLYreallyREALLY tight budget. Thanks ;)

I've been in the city for 2 weeks now and plan to stay 2 months. In my opinion the sukhumvit area is much more convenient if you really want to see bangkok. Travel around will certainly cost you less and you'll be right in the center of the city. Khoa San road is far away from everything else but it's a great area with lots of atmosphere. Certainly more authentic if you get get outside of the traveler area. Not sure if this will help but we found a cheap apartment via this link
Holiday Velvet but most of the real budget accommodation is around the Khao San road area.

Hey Eva!

I'v been to both places a few times and tbh i am not sure witch 1 i like the most ... it depends on what mood i am in haha..
But if u are on a real tight budget i would choose sukhumvit. as James says... its in the center of the city and u got the skytrain coz from khao san u will need to take taxi or buss all the time if u wanna leave that area and that could end upp "exp"...

if u decide to go to Sukhumvit this is the place to stay... "Suk 11 Hostel" www.suk11com
the location is awsome in a small aly that looks like a Jungle in mid bkk quiet cool imo.. its about 150m away from the "Nana" skytrain station
ones ur at nana ask ur way to Hotel Ambasador witch is ahuge complex and all ppl around knows where it is and the hostel u will find on the oposite side off the road. (turn left after 7eleven)
And just next to it its a small Vietnamese restaurant good food for a small penny...
aprox.. 50-150 bath/meal and 1 drink if i remember correct

a small suggestion... days in Bkk can be warm and sweety so if u decide to live on suk11 hostel u can easy sneak into Ambassador pool area and catch a bath haha thats what we did a few times....

take care and have good fun
Robin

hi there,

I 've been to BKK several times and may go again this week. I stay at Kao San every when I was in BKK cause there are many hostels to choose, and it is easy to find a one day package tour organised by travel agents. The hotel I used to stay is just opposite the airbus terminal. Sorry I forgot the name. The entry is quite interesting. You should look for a jewellery shop. The entry is like a garage frontdoor next to the jewellery shop, there is a staircase to go up. The staff there used to be friendly, but I am afraid they came and go.....As far as I can remember, it cost me about 440THB for a very clean single room with private bathroom and aircon last year.

The grand palace is just 20 mins walk from Kao San, and next to the palace is the sleeping buddha monastry, and the canal is just around. You can take the boat aross the canal to the Wat Arum just opposite the canal(river). By the way, you will come across a museum if you walk to the palace from Kao San. It is worth a visit from my point of view. Check the map and plan your route before you go. :-) That will take you half a day for this trip. NB : Be sure to check the guide book for lady's dressing for entering the palace, the guard at the front door are quite straight to the regulation!

If you like to see more about Buddha. You should go to Ayuthaya (my favourite other than Sukuthai). You can join a day tour or go by yourself by taking a north going train. There should be some express train leaving for Ayuthaya in the morning and cost more for the ticket. I 've been there 3 times by trian and found that most train that going north will stop there, so check the schedule first. Going to the train station from Kao San by bus is tricky, so I suggest you to go by taxi. There will be some people offering help at the station, be careful of that! Go straight to the tourist box if you need help.

In Ayuthaya, you can hire a bike next to the train station to take a bike tour. The bike hiring shop will provide you a map of Ayuthaya too! That is what I call service! As there are quite a lot of Monastry to see, you better check your guide book for a planning.

If you like shopping(most girls will do), you should go to Chatuchak Market. Take the BTS and get off at Mo Chit. Take Exit No.1 and ask people about the direction. It will be 5 to 10mins on foot and is very easy to find.

!

NB : Never buy any gems or jewellery unless you are an expert. There are guys in the street saying that there are shops offering very big sale....That is their trick trying to direct you to their shops.

Cheers and have fun. Hoping you a very happy tour in BKK. Pardon my English! :*)
