Clearly Amsterdam is famous for several things, several things that we intend on seeing! Just wondering if anyone has any tips on bars we shouldn't miss, museums that may be better than the rest, places noone talks about that we absolutely have to see, or even places that are a waste of time.

Thanks!! :-)

I found both the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijsmuseum to be wonderful - but I adore art. Check the web site of Kuekenhof before you leave; as this has been a warm winter, the tulips may be blooming much earlier than normal. If they are, its not to be missed. Amsterdam is very walkable, and we really enjoyed self-guided walking tours. If you want to read details about my experiences, do read my blog at www.sujablogs.blogspot.com

I would definately say that Anne Frank's House is worth it - but make that your first stop of the day to avoid large queue.

Just walking thru the Red Light District is enough for me for one day. Ho boy! Also, there is a coffee shop called Siberie. It's very low-key...no low lighting or scary techno music here, just laid back folks enjoying some...er...coffee. They do actually sell COFFEE.

There is so much to see in Amsterdam, much of it ignored by the vast majority of tourists. Its going to sound strange, but when I'm in Amsterdam, I always visit the zoo! Amsterdam has one of the biggest and best zoos in the world in my opinion. Its also one of the oldest zoos in Europe.

If you get bored smoking dope and soaking in that wonderful unique atmosphere, make sure you pop along and look at the 'Artis Zoo'. Its in the Plantage District.

I found this nice review of Amsterdam's off-beat sites:

I will be visiting this wonderful city for many more years to come.

If you're into stuff that's a bit different try the sex museum. It's a pretty cool place and definitely worth the visit, and cheap too the last time I was there. If you have a chance try and get up to Apeeldorn. It's an awesome Monkey zoo kinda place. Just make sure you get a monkey proof bag when you get there...

Yeah, that's right. Lock all your valuables up in that and hope the kiddies aren't crafty enough to get into it!

If the weather is good you can take a relaxing canal boat trip. And if you like art you should visit both the Van Gogh Museum and the Rijksmuseum. The latter is undergoing a restoration at the moment but there is still plenty to see, including Rembrandt's spectacular 'Night Watch', although when I went a couple of weeks back it was rather crowded.
