Why did you decide to travel?
I was introduced to National Geographic Magazine when I was in second grade and I always loved reading about the different places in the world. I always liked the stories of exploration and adventure when I was young and I was constantly mounting my own expeditions into the forests, mountains and swamps near where I lived. I grew to love archaeology and nature and I started planning short trips to places I wanted to see in countries like Mexico, Peru and Nepal when I got out of college. Over the last few years I began realizing that the short trips that Corporate America allowed me to take were insufficient to fulfill my insatiable desire for knowledge and adventure and, since I never really fit in to the rat-race lifestyle that so many people hold dear, I put together a plan to escape.
Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?I suppose that Antarctica is the most exotic place I have been.
How was this place different from where you are from? The desolate beauty and remoteness of this great wilderness, where storms of epic proportions are the norm and the resourcefulness of the life that call this frozen continent home is mind-boggling - It is almost and exact opposite of where I am from.
Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?I have always wanted to go to Africa, but haven’t made it yet - I will at some point on my trip though.

I really dont know why people travel, but for the otherwise social reasons. As I tend to get answers for big Questions .. almost always from the Evolution Point of View.. it hardly justifies the kind of travelling we all humans do now in this current age. The most natural point of travel could be for food. Like migration of African wild beasts, Zebras etc .. in regular intervals for various food and security reasons. and yet even such great migrations have definite routes and a limitation of borders beyond which it doesnt extend. It is only, we Humans, who dont have limitations or borders .. , Aloha, we even travelled into Space.. !.. I really dont want to comment anything negative on human travels.. and dont have such ideas. but for academic interest it is my habit to think and try to explore and compare and put it all in a big frame and look at it. I travelled.. extensively through-out India and Nepal. Of course I never had passion for travel.. but some unusual circumstances forced me to tral in a most unplanned way.. which finally looked to me like criss-crossing India.. and thus for two years. India Nepal and Andaman Islands. One of the most striking experience I can recall from my travels is when I was Andaman Islands.
It was when I was doing snorkling in some very isolated waters.. ( it was my first ever experience of snorkling too.. ) .. It was just mme and the boat man in the place .. and the rest is all just calm waters.. and no signs of any other Human being for next 5 10 Kms. WHen I first dipped my head into the clear waters.. and saw the astonishingly colourful life just beneath.. and just going about their way. in highly tranquil world of their own.. a deep feeling stirred in my mind.. and i just surfaced my head.. for a while I felt .. 'may be I am committing a sin by intruding into a completely different world to which i dont belong.. also for god hasn't given me birth in those localities.. but .. some 4000 Kms away from where I am snorkling. my Enthusiasm and curiosity quickly overtook my this sudden spurt of guilt feeling .. and made me continue the snorkling.. the feeling I felt in those few seconds never did leave me.. it is still fresh.. and my mind still tries to find an answer to my feeling.. is it really sin.. ? .. extending it.. are we humans committing a sort of mistake.. just by doing things we dont have capacity with the Biological Body we have been given by this nature.. ? .. and may be probably those limitations.. in othersense .. give us a sign of answer for maintaining balance and peace on this world.. ! I dont know.. I reallY DONT KNOW ! :(

Here's a quick reply to your original question, but I also wrote a bit about "how are you different after returning from traveling"

Why did you decide to travel?
Didn't like my current career path, had some money saved up, and no responsibilities.

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?
India - in particular, Delhi at the start of Diwali

How was this place different from where you are from?
Different in any way you can imagine (except for the language)

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?
Australia or New Zealand - Distance

The reasons I love to travel.

I guess it is hard to sum it up in a few words but I have worked out four main reasons why I love it so much.
1) Trying to find comfort outside my comfort zone
2) Speaking (at least in part) other languages
3) Eating foods and experiencing other cultures
4) Paying for goods in other currencies

It is very broad but some of the reasons I love it. That is not to mention having a desire to see famous sites, buildings, cities etc and to be able to say you have been there.

Good luck with it cause it's a hard one to nail down.

Why did you decide to travel?
>>> I am flirting with life, staying for a certain place and absorb all that I can and I will say "Ohh, I love this place, so, so much!", but I don't guarantee that I will stay in that place forever.
>>>Travelling is seeing the reality you would have never thought existing.

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?
>>> Varkala, Kerala, India
>>> Sagada Mountain Province, Philippines
>>> Chapada dos Guimarães, Brazil

How was this place different from where you are from?
>>> Lots of adrenalin strength and high-stamina required when you will visit these places. Not so much of a relaxing gateaway tourist destinations often promises, but more. Adventures, believe it or not things, and real-life tearjerking sights.

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?
>>>>>>>BERMUDA TRIANGLE and BED of the Pacific Ocean. It's possible that I can't go back. And lots will cry coz they will see mah face no more. (didn't they say that in every travel, you can meet someone interesting?)

travel is addicitve! the coolest place I've seen in Namibia and Bali and East java.

we travel for the freedom to dream! the feeling of TOTAL FREEDOM AND DISCOVERY!

God how predictable life is in the west, the rat race.

obviously it helps if you're single, ....kinda hard to travel freely with kids in tow

Graham Greene said........."travel is a form of emotional satisfaction"

that's a good description. people let loose to get away from stress and boredom in the west...the Nanny state and all the rules and regs of life.........

for me the beach, sky, sunset, (and cheap prices!!!) is a wonderful way to be free.

the downside is you lose your sense of roots and too much travel can culturally confusing.....

The west is obsessed with "more" but so often people with less have more

Because I am a coward and I don't want to grow up and graduate and get a job quite yet.

Why did you decide to travel? So I can have an epiphany and figure out what I want to do with my life.

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled? Places close to home. Oklahoma is pretty foreign sometimes. I absolutely love traveling in the US. Also Serbia, Serbia was pretty crazy.

How was this place different from where you are from? Serbia was chaotic and things you take for granted as just magically happening in the US- like buses coming on time and not breaking down, don't necessarily happen in Serbia.

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?

I want to do a massive road trip across the US, mostly in the south. Or maybe all of North America. Or all the way down to Chile. But I lack the funds and the Dean Moriarty for that trip.

I travel because it builds my perspective. Always, without fail, whenever I leave home--whether it's driving off for a weekend getaway or flying to another destination--I return only to make a significant change in my life. If that change is not sudden, it comes overtime. A good example would be my recent visits to Maritime Canada, where the citizens enjoy simple living and high quality of life. I learned to mirror the lifestyle by ditching the hectic job and getting more into home life and doing things I love--like writing. Although I take in less money now, I'm learning to have a life that feels more like a vacation rather than hell on earth.

Why did you decide to travel?

I did another snow season in australia and my room mate told me all about south east asia and inspired me and hence I inspired two friends who have never been out of Australia to accompany me.

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?

Lohifushi Island Resort, North Atoll, MALDIVES - amazing place with amazing waves.

How was this place different from where you are from?

The waves were all reef breaks, where im from they are sand breaks, the food was amazing, the people are beautiful and it was paradise.

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?

I have always wanted to travel to UK and Europe and USA for snowboarding and working holidays. Unfortunately I was living beyond my means, earning good money but spending more on credit, see I grew up quite poor and when I realised a good job with good pay I went and bought all the toys I ever wanted but it never really brought me hapiness. Since discovering the beauty of spirituality and the simple pleasures in life I have been inspired to achieve a goal of actually getting out of debt, saving money and fulfilling my worldy desires. Its funny how your perception of the illusion that life is changed after learning a few hard lessons.

Why did you decide to travel?

To understand the world and myself.

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?

My dreams at night. Sometimes I go into space.

How was this place different from where you are from?

No one can ever come with me.

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?

Another dimension. I am not sure how yet.

My husband and I are artists traveling for one year around the continental U.S. The Nomadic Project is a conceptual art project that involves all of America. I will leave a painting in each state as he works on his music. An exhibit including all of the paintings, video documentary, music and even e-mails will follow our path after we complete our travels. The exhibit will be an experience for viewers to be introduced to the similarities and diversities of the American culture. Be a part of this incredible journey at www.KristinAbraham.com.

I travel because I find it a relaxing way to challenge the mind and rejuvenate the spirit. There is a real high connecting with people who speak differently, and have different perceptions of the world. I find culture facinating. It often challenges my own perception of reality. For example, if you watch hollywood movies, germans are curt and indifferent. In reality, they are some of the warmest and friendliest people I have come across. I thought Italy would be romantic and picturesque and I did not like it much at all compared to other places I had visited.

In the day and age of television "Exotic" can mean so many different things to many different people. I loved Prague. It was so unique and so different than anything I anticipated. I could have walked the streets and talked to anyone who would entertain me for days. I also loved the beaches in Portugal. Really incredable.

Prague was different because you could catch a symphony, play, puppet show, opera, etc any time of day. People would stop you in the street to get you to take a look. Here at home (Canada), I have to buy tickets 3 months in advance, get dressed up, put on make up and make an event out of it. I have been on the East Coast, West Coast, all over the Carribean, Hawaii and I have never seen beaches like that. You could hike them for days. It was like a perfectly natural Jungle Gym. It was amazing.

I read a John Grisholm book a couple of years ago and I have wanted to do a River boat (driver, me, my partner and two hammocks) cruise up the rio grande to remote rain forrests and villages. I only have so much vacation per year and sooner or later I will have to have to grow up!

Why did you decide to travel?
I decided to travel because I have never left this country and wanted to leave to see what else was out there. I think it was to find something "better".
I feel the urge to travel more now that I have done it because I have been depressed since I've been back. When I'm travelling, I am constantly learning, I am always intrigued, challenged, and stimulated. And now that I am back at home doing "home" things, it is very easy to ask "why am I here when I could be out there?"

Where has been the most "exotic" place you have ever travelled?
Not really anywhere "exotic".... Does Hawaii count as exotic?
I think, culturally, Spain was it for me.

How was this place different from where you are from?
Everything. History is preserved so well in Europe compared to the states. People are more laid back. Partying is so accepted when you are a young person. It's safer in ways too. I felt more comfortable walking down the street at 4am there than I do here.
There are people from so many parts of the world in Europe. Here, we have many people from other countries, but not like there. I could go somewhere and could be people in there from 6 or 7 different parts of the world.

Where have you always wanted to travel but have never gone, and why?
I want to go everywhere. I want to see everything that I can. I think the world is beautiful and I'm in such a small part of it. I've never gone because I haven't really chosen it as my primary passion. If it were, I would save my money only to travel, and then leave whenever I felt I had enough to. But, life here is work, school, things like that. Maybe someday... I'm really hoping.. I will be out there travelling instead of sitting here at work watching others travel.

I like how Irish Doll phrased it - flirting with life. That pretty much sums it up for me too. Always wanting to know what's over there ---------->. You know, just over the hill, or maybe several hills away, lol!! Huge hunger to associate myself with the family of man in general. I feel so connected with the planet by travelling. I'd be curious to know how many of us DID start with reading National Geographic.....

Why did you decide to travel?

To gain perspective on myself and the world around me. I am 20 years old and quite fed up with what I'm 'supposed' to be doing. So I'm choosing to travel instead. I hope by traveling I will gain a deeper understanding of myself and what it is that will truly make me happy.

Also, I think it's important to travel internationally now because travelling in giant metal birds running on gasoline is not going to be an economically viable option for people in the future, myself included.

After my first experience out of the U.S., I've learned that I am more attracted to people who have been out of our country and know what it's like to leave and come back. I catch accents and am strangely drawn to them. If I hear someone talking about travelling, I am eavesdropping. Strange because I don't really do that. It just excites me to hear about other people travelling because I may have been there. More often, it's a place I haven't been that they are talking about. I try to hear what they say to know their experiences. I guess that's why I'm on here so often, reading about other's adventures. There are SOOOO many places I want to go. Being stuck in one place... especially within culture such as the U.S. , all I think about is getting out.

I agree with corijene. I eavesdrop people who talks about their travels. And most of the time they'd be asking about my stories once they realize I have the slightest interest in their conversations.

Reason why :
I travelled with parents throughout SE asia throughout childhood. But the first time I really travelled was when I backpacked Yangshuo and Lijiang area in China last year. And now I have to go revisit Thailand, Malaysia, Aussie and all sorts of other places I've been but not really been. I love learning the language. Ordering food blindly out of the menu. Talking with locals (even if it's just bargaining). Meeting fellow travellers. Seeing awesome sceneries that is out of this world and say wholeheartedly. "there is something bigger out there. seriously. no human can possibly create this" with 100 percent certainties. Able to justify biking for hours under the hot blistering sun just to see a pond at the other side of the city. (where I come from, it'd be just nuts who does it) See the world.

And yes. I read National Geographic religiously whenever my dad bought them. (it was a pretty expensive magazine to have back then) :)

Most exotic place :
-That summer jazz festival in San Fransisco- :D. Having 12 blocks of street blocked for musicians to jam as they like, people to dance and dance and dance is a very exotic thing to me!!

I really want to go to :
Macchu Piccu & Brazil & Sichuan & swiss - Never had the chance. yet.
