I generally start with whichever country or continent or hobby(history, diving, dining....) interests me most and then go from there. Often what gets me interested in a country is something I read or heard about it or something somebody said or something I am interested in about that country. If there is a particular country or continent which interest you, you could read the blogs about that place.

The Front Page blogs may be a good first place to start if you dont have any country or continent preferences at all. Often plucking out a blog at random is what inspires me to find out more about a particular country or a particular persons style of travel. When you find something of interest you could then start posting questions on the forums if you want, to find out how possible it is for you to go to a particular place.

As a female traveller, Thailand my be worth considering for a first exotic destination. It is relatively safe and hassle free for women.

There is also the Travel Guide for those who are New to Independent Travel, which was written by Ali.

And the New to Independent Travel Forum.

I am a passionate traveler who love to travel far off tourist destinations all over the world. I always prefer traveling alone. I am happy these days because there has been a considerable fall in the international flights. Thanks to the increasing competition among the popular airlines that offer cheap tickets to all popular destinations of the world.

The world is a big place... probably an overwhelming number of choices that will far exceed what most people will have time or money to visit. That said I'd suggest, as Mell generally suggested, is finding a type of activity to do or other general interest and then finding countries that would be conducive to those interests. You may also consider language as a deciding factor. While there's always something to new experiences and "putting yourself out there" as means of new experiences, there's also something said to taking a first international trip with somewhere that there is a common language.

That response may be vague, but to be honest with so many options it's hard to pinpoint a certain location especially with variables such as your interests and hopes in a vacation, plus willingness to try new adventures that would take you out of your "comfort zone", but yield great new experiences.
