do eat: churros in barcelona / mussels in brussels / fish n chips in england / kebebs in berlin / wine, cheese and a baguette in any small village in france / anything in italy / paella in valencia / those sausages they serve in germany& czech with a dollop of mustard

dont bother too much with: haggis in scotland / fois gras anywhere / goulash in hungary / pernod or raki, or any other aniseedy alcohol that goes white when you add water...

Speaking of things to eat and not to eat, do eat Brezen in the south of Germany. They are available in all bakeries. Dont eat blood sausage in Germany.

Beer in Belgium and deep fried mars bars in Scotland. Probably don't combine the two though.

Pretty much anything in belgium - beer, mussels, waffles, chips with mayo, the chocolate, cream cakes, seafood... why belgium??

BTW, that pic of the mars bar is just so...well... its....not really selling it is it?

Saurkraut tastes better than one would think. Eat it in Germany.

And dont forget 'Kafee und Kuchen'(coffee and cakes) in the cafes in Germany. The traditional time to have it is 4PM, but on weekends the cafes get crowded at this time, so go at maybe 3 or 5PM instead. And order whipped cream to go with the cake.

You could drink Guinness in Ireland, but be warned that it is an aquired taste. Drink it in pubs where it is on tap, but dont buy it bottled or canned in Off Licences or Supermarkets.

French fries in Holland! But try the different ones, you have patatje oorlog (french fries war) with peanut sauce, mayonaise and raw onions, patatje special (french fries special), curry sauce, mayonaise and raw onions and of course patatje met (french fries with), which is the one with just mayonaise. I won't say you will like it, but it is traditional Dutch snack food, and thus you should try it... Other snacks include, frikandel speciaal, a sausage with curry, mayonaise and raw onions and kroket, another kind of sausage type thing. Yes, all of them are real blood clogging stuff... For something slightly healthier, all be it for most tourists also more daunting, try raw herring with onions on white bread or just like that.

Mussels in Holland are as good as the ones in Belgium.

As for beer, drink a Grolsch in Holland, the stuff they export is shit, believe me, their is a difference when you get it in Holland. It is brewed without preservativs, just like the German beers. Another good beer is La Trappe, the only Dutch monks beer and it is as good as any you can get in Belgium.

In Sweden you have to have the smorgasbord. And try gravad lax, which is smoked salmon with a mustard type sauce and Skagenrora: baked potatoes, filled with a creamy sause and shrimps (also real easy to make at home and impress guests with).

Anywhere in ex-yugoslavia, make sure you try šljivovica, smokovač or some kind of rakia (rakia is a family of fruit brandies - not the same thing as raki). If youre brave, its common for older people especially in Croatia to sell rakia on the street that they've made in their own stills. Also, eat čevapčići.

In Czech Republic, drink the most local beer you can find (which in Prague is Staropramen), similar to the above advice about Grolsch in Holland, it tastes miles better. Don't bother drinking czech beer in Sweden - they love importing really obscure regional ones for some reason which are great in their region, but not in Stockholm. While I'm on this subject, same warning against drinking Guinness anywhere on the continent. Some things just don't travel.

Belgian beer? Delirium Tremens. Nuff said. If you're into sweet fruit wheer beers like Früli, do drink Kriek and Frambosen, but do not bother with the ridiculous flavours like Chocolate, Cola, Banana, Coconut... they taste dreadful and I honestly think they're just curiosity traps.

Don't even try pizza in Italy. It's disgusting as strange as it sounds. It's plain, no flavor, like eating air. Best pizza I have ever tried is in the US. All other types of food are phenominal!

I also had bad experiences with pizza in Italy, years ago my family did a house swap with a family who lived in this really posh town in Sardinia, and the local pizzeria just went crazy with the thinnest bases and more herbs than topping. Not nice.

The best pizza I've ever had is the stuff made in Italian restaurants (run by Italians) in London.. I don't quite understand it!

Relying on other people's tastes to match your own is a stretch :)
