I am writing this at 3:10 am b/c at this point I have been waiting on something that was promised to me that is sure to never come. Here is the back story: I encouraged my Mother to fly on Virgin America to visit me in San Diego for my graduation...mistake #1. The flight in was decent. The issues started the moment we left my house for her departure back to the east coast...though I will spare all the details, save one.

The backstory: My parents are meeting my husband and I in Playa del Carmen on Wednesday (today), and my Mom took the red eye out of San Diego on Monday to Dulles in D.C.

So upon landing finally at Dulles after a red eye, my Mom finds that her bags are lost. They could not be located because apparently Virgin America DOES NOT have a scanning system for their bags!!!! So the bag was lost for approximately 12 hours, with absolutely no one returning phone calls from the baggage desk. Noma, if you are reading this, find a new job b/c you obviously cannot find the time in your daily "bag counter" routine to return a phone call.

After 12 hours we found out that her bag may or may not have been found in NYC and re-routed back to San Francisco!!!! After my mom was never never never consulted about this decision. So since my mom needed her clothes, meds, and luggage for Playa del Carmen, we requested to have the bag flown down to San Diego on one of two flights so that I could pick it up at the airport for her. Well b/c there is no scanning/tracking system we had to wait to find out if it was theoretically on one of the two flights to San Francisco, and if it could be flown down here to San Diego. I was called and told it was definitely on it's way down to San Diego and that I should pick it up...after asking if it could be delivered (as would happen with any other airline) I was assured it would be in my hands by 1 am...guess what, it is now 3:21 am, and it is not here, and of course no one can be reached.

I spoke with a rep from Virgin today who indicated that a tracking/scanning system for bags may or may not be invested in, in the future...Let me tell you something, this is 2009, Virgin has Wi-fi in every plane, and a refreshment ordering system from each seat, yet they cannot manage to put into place a scanning system for luggage so that someone knows where on earth bags are at any given moment.

Virgin America is the biggest joke in history. We will be flying out to Playa del Carmen in several hours with no luggage, and absolutely no clue where it could be.

You have been warned.

I can really understand where you are coming from - I recently returned from a holiday in Amercia - during which I had to take an internal flight - with guess who - Virgin Amercia - and yes - you guessed it - 1 of our 3 bags did not arrive. Fortunately earlier in the year we had purchased some luggage tags from a company called CallUma - I had never heard of them until a friend recommended them to us. Anyway after having reported my luggage missing, describing it and filling a form - I then contacted CallUma - who did EVERYTHING for me. They contacted the airlines , made numerous calls to track my bag down and kept me in the loop. 27 hours later my bag was found and returned to me.

It was stressful enough seeing the lack of my baggage arriving on the carousel and then the subsequent form filling in BUT thank goodness for the luggage tags that I had purchased - I really believe that without these I would never have seen my bag again - and your story only confirms this.

I would recommend checking out the website for CallUma - www.calluma.com - it was a great service and one I would strongly recommend to anyone travelling abroad.

That sounds amazing!!!! I am definitely going to check those tags out, as we are headed to Europe for the Thanksgiving Holiday! Thanks for the heads up :) My Mother's bags were returned to her 29 days later...but at least nothing was missing.

My husband is from England and travels back and forth three or four times a year to see his children. On his last trip he came across a great product which he purchased for around $12.00. The company is called CALLUMA and offer some great things to put a traveler at ease. What my husband bought was a one year subscription to a luggage tracking service. He got a membership card and three luggage tags, all with a unique tracking number on them.On the back of each tag are six different flags representing six different countries all with a message in the appropriate language saying "IF FOUND, CALL" and there own phone number next to this.So this is great anywhere in the world. With our names and address not being shown, but just the tracking number we feel this must be a service everyone should invest in, with such a minimal amount of money . The other great thing is that this service works far beyond the airports. If you leave anything you have tagged either in a taxi, in an elevator, or on a train, your chances of being re-united with you belongings are far greater with this tag attached.
Last year my dad paid us a surprize visit from St Croix.....U.S.V.I. A few hours after he arrived he realized that he had left his camera in the taxi. To cut a long story short we got the camera back 27 hours later.
I asked the taxi company that if there was a tag on the camera with "IF FOUND CALL" and a phone number, would you use it. There reply was.... of course, it would cut out needless paperwork and give our company a good reputation.

Check out this service at CALLUMA.COM. We never go on trips without our bags being tagged.
