I'd like to know how common and safe tenting is throughout China.

In China, can you pitch a tent on crown land just like we do in Canada? I plan on travelling away from the big cities and stay in the country. I'm going to be taking a train most places but I won't hesitate to walk somewhere if that is my only method of transportation to site see. I need to know how safe it is to pitch a tent and if it is a common site to see?

Camping is not too popular in China, some westerners do camp but usually away from the populated area, you can try north Yunnan in the mountains

Definitely not common, but feasible :-) (done it myself although it was without tent...long story) In the countryside, and especially when outside of the most famous sites, people are very friendly and would most of the time welcome you in their place when no hotel/ restaurant are available, so a tent...well, should not be a big deal!
Enjoy your trip around China!

I did it once in Inner Mongolia, and it's possible. However, almost all of China is populated (unless you leave for Xinjiang or Tibet), and my experience is that you can walk into any small village and find a place to stay. Bigger ones often have a small guest house, and else there are always locals willing to let you sleep there.

Learn Chinese for 'can I sleep here'^^
