Callan and Kayleigh,

TravelBlog has an "Other Travel Sites" forum: if you have places in Madrid that you would like to bring to TravelBlog users' attention, please nominate one of you to post a link on that forum.

Hi

Madrid is a relatively small capital and you can see the monuments in a day or so. I would suggest you just buy a guidebook on arrival and go from there.

If you are into art galleries, the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza are fantastic. If you prefer modern art, then head to the Sofia. Modern art doesn't set my world alight so I was underwhelmed by its collection.

I'd also suggest having a look at the Royal Palace and the Plaza Mayor. Madrid has some amazing buildings, so if you like classical architecture, there will be plenty to gaze at and photograph.

As a day trip, visit the Monastery at Escorial - it is easily reached by train which then transfers to a waiting public bus. The building complex is a gargantuan array of rooms and corridors - it should not be missed.

There are lots of things to see in Madrid, and I have to agree that the museums are a highlight. I would probably not visit Madrid without visiting the three museums (Prado, Thyssen and Reina Sofia). The Retiro park is also something that shouldn't be missed. <snip>
As far as day trips, only do them if you have time. Toledo is also a good day trip (plus, only 1/2 an hour away on the high speed train). If you go to El Escorial, take a sweater because the palace is dark, damp and chilly all year round.

Too many things to do and to see in Madrid. Indeed guidebooks can be very helpful but I warmly suggest you to get to know a bit Spanish society along with guides reading. By doing so you might find all the popular sites mentioned in the guides much more interesting. Watching few movies and documents can be very effective. If you ask me, there is nothing more enjoyable than wandering around Madrid streets and markets. Impressive! :) <snip>
