I was planning on Nice and Marseille...any other suggestions? I was also wondering if we should even try for both of those or just pick one of those or somewhere different??

Cassis....right in the middle, just before Marseilles....but it's all depend which time of the year.
You could also stop in Camragues.

Have fun,

Peter

Nice st, tropez? Is St. Tropez a city? and we're going to be there end of June/beginning of July...would that be good timing for Cassis? What is Cassis like? and St. Tropez? if that's a city :)

St Tropez is a little leisure port...it's the start of the high seasons. Think beaches and yacht....and steep prices...

Nice...big city...not really nice...but that's my personnal opinion

Cassis, little fishing port few miles from Marseille (avoid Marseille). It is in Calanques....this means clear water, cliffs, very traditinal little place. Make sure you book accomodation ahead wherever you go.

Cassis sounds like what I'm looking for. We're doing the Paris thing earlier in the trip and I don't really want to see anything specific, I kind of just want a small village like town to get a taste of France without all the tourists....just see the land and people watch :)

On booking accomodations...I've heard to book ahead before and you mentioned it here. How necessary is that if we're just going for economical, as in hostels, cheapo hotels. We don't need luxury, just a bed and safety, shower if we're lucky. My whole plan for the trip was to just buy the Eurail pass and come and go as we pleased, but now everyone is telling me to book everything ahead of time. I've given in to booking train reservations with the pass ahead of time, but I REALLY didn't want to have to find accommodations everywhere. Coming from the U.S. I have no idea where anything is and I don't want to end up booking something that's way out of our way. I want to be able to get off the train each place we stop and find some place to stay near the train station. Is this possible? Also, I'm budgeting $75 American dollars a night for lodging...am I dreaming to think I can get it that cheap? Am I on track or is that way too much? And I'm talking for all through Europe...France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, back to France and rounding out in Spain.

Ok, on a budget, you've got 2 options...well actually 3...

75usd a night...for a hostel, no problem, you are very safe...

After ths you have the 1 and 2 stars hotels...chains as accor have Formule 1, Etap and Ibis, and you should be able to fit in Etap and Formule 1...they clearly lack in personnality...but they are clean and safe. You can book them without even seeing the room as this is standard....very low level of service, but you've got what you pay for...a Formule 1 room can get 3 people in for as less as 40usd....but be careful, most of these can only be reached by car and are out of the tourist places...so better if you have a car.

You also have the independant 1 & 2 stars hotels....this is the "lotery" style, an booking ahead can be tricky.

Next choice is B&B...in France, they call it "chambre d'hote"...most will fit in you budget....but Cassis in July...this is high end seasons...so the price to go up...a lot...and this is why you need to book!

Not sure a train get you to Cassis, but there are buses for sure from Marseilles. It may simply worth it to rent a car for few days out of Marseilles train station...same thing, book this ahead...

You would not have any problem in April without booking, but this is top season...except if you want to spend time looking around. A trick is to book your first night at least.

Hope this help.
