I am going to be on a 6 hour layover in Paris- I think this means that I could spend one hour in the city, but I need recommendations of how to make the most of it

I am taking a trip with my family to Europe- I will have a 6 hour layover on my flight in Paris I figure with 2 hours through customs and deboarding, etc then half an hour ride in a cab and the same 2 1/2 hours on the other end of things I could get a good hour in Paris. I have never been before and doubt I would get back there any time soon so I would like to go into the city rather than just waiting at the airport for six hours. Do you have any recommendations on how to make the best use of my time?

Hello Colette and welcome to the Forum!

A big factor here is going to be when you arrive. If it is peak hour, then the train is your best bet - it is called the RER and according to my limited research, it will take you about 40 minutes. Even if it is not peak hour, the taxi fare will be expensive.

My suggestion is this: take the RER into the city, and if you are intent on grabbing a taxi, do so now and then go for a drive, you wont have time to enter any museums. I would suggest the following route from Ile de la Cité - but you could start anywhere on this route.

From your start, where the Notre Dame is, drive past the Lourve, and head to the Champs Elysèe. You will pass Place de la Concorde and maybe detour to Église de la Madeleine along the way. Once you have reached the end of Champs Elysèe, you will pass the Arc de Triomphe and head left to go across the Seine river for a good look at the Eiffel Tower. After crossing the river, you could turn left and follow the road along the river, it will give you a great view of the Seine and a backdrop of the major sights as well. You will then end up back at the turnoff to the Ile de la Cité, thus completing your circuit. I think an open bus does a similar route, but a taxi is going to get you around quicker.

If you have a good taxi driver who can miraculously find a car park in Paris, you might be able to stop off at the Eiffel Tower and other places for a short photo session - but this is unlikely.

Remember, if you are only having a layover, you can get your onward seat allocation at your original check-in, thus you avoid the need to do this in Paris - it will save you time. Also, you will not need a baggage check, as I'd assume you would only have hand luggage. In this case, your return to the airport is limited to passing through security, passport control and getting to the departure gate. So you may only need to arrive at the airport 75-90 minutes before your flight. This will give you an extra 30 minutes or so Paris.

Hello Colette

With that much time, I would take a taxi to someplace like the Eifel tower. I wouldnt go up it, because that takes too much time. I would just look at it and then go to a cafe in a nearby street and have lunch or a couple of coffees. There is a street with lots of cafes around 200 M from the Eifel tower.

You can also do the city tour like I did in early may while I was stuck in Paris. You can see so much in that 6 hours. get on and off at different stops. have fun
