Hello Oisin

Accommodation during the 10 or so days of the run can be very tight, especially during the first weekend. If you arrive towards the end of the run (as I did) there is more space available. According to people I met there who stayed for the whole festival, the first weekend was bedlam in terms of finding even camping places, and the town much more vibrant and lively.

I had a car with camping equipment and turned up without any booking. There was a temporary camp site establihed with lots of young people pitching tent and I just pulled up my car and did the same. I cannot recall paying anything for this site (it was almost 20 years ago!) but even if I did, it was such a small amount that I didn't really notice (or remember).

Would be interested to read what people with more recent experience have to say.
