They are relatively close, and both very beautiful places to just chill. | Acapulco is more touristy than P.E. Its a nice combination and if you make the right choises about hotel/hostal, restaurant, transport and more....it will be cheap. Playa del CArmen is a centric place, because many touristic places are close. Like Chichen Itza, Tulum, Cobá, Cozumel, Valladolid (cenotes). Always be happy wherever you are. Mexico is a nice vacation destination. I have been going there for 20 years and have hitchhiked through every state in Mexico. The US just issued a travel advisory on Mexico. There is a civil war going on in the North. 6000 killed last year, 2000 so far this year. Peso is down, that really helps. Roads to Acapulco have always been loaded with bandits. Travel on the better bus line. With the ecomony tanking, crime is up. The State Department’s travel alert (travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_3028.html) provides specific directions and additional links regarding travel in Mexico through August 2009. All students considering travel to Mexico are urged to review this information, particularly the “Spring Break in Mexico: Know Before You Go” publication. I suggest the Yucatan, Merida is a cool non gringo town to start out. Then go south along the coast. I see in hostal.com that rooms are $7 which means there are places for $ 3- $ 4. | Cancun has been ruined a long time ago. ditto now probably for Playa de Carmen, but south of there are some good spots. The water and the beaches are as good as anywhere in the world. An interesting place was Cay Ambergris on the Yucatan at the Mexico Belize border. A fun spot I liked a long time ago was Livingston Guatamala, they speak english. The Cays off Belize are wonderful in April. I hopped boats the coasts south of the Yucatan, that was fun, mellow, beautiful, there are always lots of good unknown spots. There should be lots of local boats. I went as far south as Rarotan Honduras. I took fishing boats, non motor fishing sailboats, local passenger boats. Just remember cities are rat nests, and so are many tourist places You will find the best people where there are the fewest gringo tourist. The tourist areas are still safe. I was on the island of Cozumel and on the mainland in the Akumal area for 2 weeks recently (myself and another woman traveling alone) and we never had a problem.
