Have you read a good book lately? Was it light reading or a challange? Give a brief description of what the book was about.
These are some of the books I have read, and re-read over the last months.
"Salmon Fishing In the Yemen" by Paul Torday
A magnificently written and quirky novel about the importance of belief, love and integrity. Fast paced and strangely gripping - I read it in one day - couldn't put it down.
"From The Holy Mountain" by William Dalrymple
A favourite author of mine.
Amongst other things outlines the eradication of Christian orthodox history by the current Turkish regime.
"The Shipping News" by Annie Prouxl
On my fourth re-read of what I believe was her best book.
Concerned with the baggage we carry through life and the possibilities that love can bring.
"The Carpet Wars"
Another re-read. A great insight into why we in the west have been at war with the Middle East for over a thousand years. But also full of detail of the lives of ordinary people.
"The Ghost Map" by Stephen Johnson.
A good read about the greatest threat to London (and all big cities of the time) in the great cholera epidemic 0f 1854 - looks at scientific enquiry.
"The Architecture of happiness” by Aain de Botton.
Makes us think about how we live and how we might change things.
"Arthur & George" by Julian Barnes.
A wonderful novel based about the true events that overtook an innocent man and the intervention of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Reply to this Gabriel Garcia Marquez' Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, about love which survived wars and rediscovering each other after many years. Also "Princess" by Jean Sasson, a true story about life inside Saudi Arabia's Royal Family.
Reply to this Candy, by Kevin Brooks.
It is about a 15 year old girl who falls into prostitution in London. Some people live sad lives.
Appart from the serious topic the book is about, it is light and easy to read. I think it is really for teenagers, but there are not always enough of the books in English I would choose to read available in the library here.
Reply to this Found Zorro on CD in Costco. What a good book! I really enjoyed finding out all of the background on Zorro. It starts with his parent's and moves on to where he went to Spain and how he became Zorro. Very good book.
Reply to this Another book I have read which is more on the non-fiction list is Liberal Fascism. Eye opener! Frightening too.
Reply to this I am currently reading ''Lullabies for Little Criminals'' by Heather O'Neill.
It is very well written and also very depressing. It is about a kid whose mother died at 16 when she was just a baby and whose father is a heroin addict.
Reply to this I have recently finished "Eat, Pray, Love" by Elizabeth which is a renowned memoir of the author about her expeditions to Italy, India and Indonesia. It was a myriad experience reading this book altogether as she has written about varied extremes of life like tasting the best pizza in Italy (or rather say best pizza in the world), chanting the slogas in the early twilight of mornings, undergoing shamanic cure for her bladder infection, etc,. It was a good read, indeed.
I am currently reading "Dance of 17 lives" - although this book is getting too much intricate into the tibetian monastry org, I'm finding patience to go on
Reply to this I am currently reading Still Here, by Linda Grant.
It is about Jewish immigrants who went to the US and the UK during the Holocaust.
It is very well written, but easy to read at the same time.
Reply to this Just finished Common Sense by Glenn Beck - I am so done with both parties!
Reply to this The Secret Countess by Eva Ibbotson.
It is about the Aristocracy in Russia who were ousted from their positions in the early 1900s in Russia. Some of them became refugees in England and the story is about those ones. I dont know if the history information is accurate or not, but the book is entertaining enough.
