hubba sinead boylan Post Count: 3 Msg: #1 62 days ago, September 30th 2008 | hey - i am a 28yr old solo female traveller arriving in delhi oct 15th and hope to travel to mac leod ganj that weekend. I hope to stay here for awhile and do some trekking, possibly to Bharmour. This leaves me with 2-3 weeks in northern india - any recommendations on where to go next? I\'m an outdoor person and prefer mountain scenery to city madness. Have been thinking of heading south-eastwards as i\'m flying home from delhi - any comments on shimla or corbett tiger reserve? Open to travelling west, so Rajistan is also a possibilty! Sorry for all the questions, but any advice at all is appreciated, whether it is on a route, or travelling alone - or if anyone has roughly the same plans, let me know!! Cheers! | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 5072 Msg: #2 62 days ago, October 1st 2008 | Hello Sinead :) | or travelling alone ![]() Female travellers in India Mel hubba sinead boylan Post Count: 3 Msg: #3 62 days ago, October 1st 2008 | Thanks Mel...i did read that last night before i went to bed - i didn't think i'd sleep! I guess i just have to mentally prepare myself for it - i've been alone in various countries, including china and southeast asia, and although annoying, I felt I could handle any unwanted attention - even if you have to raise your voice by several decibels! Someone who has been to india has told me that alot of solo female travellers hire body guards! Isn't that a bit over-the-top? Unfortunately, at the moment, all i'm hearing is negative stories from india - i'm in need of some positive vibes before i head off in 2 weeks!! | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 5072 Msg: #4 61 days ago, October 1st 2008 | Someone who has been to india has told me that alot of solo female travellers hire body guards! Isn't that a bit over-the-top? ![]() It certainly is over the top in my opinion. And I kinda fear that it may even increase sexual harassment from some men in an attempt to drumb up business. There are plenty of postitive things about India. Despite all the hassles it is the country I most want to go back to. I will be going back there at last this Christmas. There are plenty of blogs here about India that you might like to read to get the positive and interesting stories. All this is apart from the fact that a single lady travelling alone may face more attention than is welcome, especially in remote areas, where the locals are not so used to foreigners. Anytime you are traveling alone, ensure you are dressed very modestly (show minimal skin) - sometime indian men take this to be a sign that you are asking for the attention. Trekking groups are usually organised by agents with some clout in the area they operate in, and this also goes towards ensuring safety. A good itinerary of the region around Dharamshala would be: Train from Delhi to Amritsar (see Golden Temple) By road to Dharamshala for a couple of days of treks and visiting Mc Leodganj Dharmashala to Pragpur for a day Pragpur to Taragarh, where you can do some gentle trekking Taragarh to Manali - can visit Solang Glacier, and Rothang Pass Back to Delhi or on to Shimla if going towards Corbett, you could combine that with the Gangotri Glacier Trek .. Delhi to Corbett Corbett to Hardwar Hardrwar to Uttarkashi Uttarkashi to Gangotri, where the trek starts Gangotri to Bhojwasa (trek) Bhojwasa to Tapovan (trek) Tapovan to Nandanvan (trek) Nandanvan to Gangotri (trek) back to Hardwar/Rishikesh Train to delhi Hope this helps! hubba sinead boylan Post Count: 3 Msg: #8 55 days ago, October 8th 2008 | Thank you Siddhartha! I never intended doing a trek alone and am looking forward to joining up with a group of some sort. Since my last post on this blog, I have come up with a provisional itinerary which almost matches what you are saying: train from delhi to amritsar to see golden temple & border ceremony, then bus to dharmasala/mac leod ganj, possibly a couple of days trekking, then bus to rishikesh for a night or so, bus to joshimath where i'd like to do the kuari pass trek, then down to kausani for a few days, nainatal, and back to delhi.....would love to do more, but only have a month :( | thanks again! siddhartha kongara Siddhartha Kongara Post Count: 14 Msg: #9 55 days ago, October 8th 2008 | sounds good. dharamshala to rishikesh may be a bit too much of a bus journey, especially as it gets colder. in case you happen to be from england, you may even be able to fly into amritsar direct (jet airways or air india). this would let you do a dharamshala-delhi, delhi-rishikesh journey, which would be far more comfortable. | cheers and good luck with your travels. <snip> [Edited: 10:45 - Mell - Removed URL and promotion] Number of Users: 5 | Number of Posts: 9 | ||||||||||||||||||
