We will be going to Punta Sal, Tumbes early November 2008 and Health Clinics in Montreal strongly suggest to get malaria pills, (Malarone). We will be 2 - 3 days in Punta Sal at a resort then off to Machu Picchu.
Should I get the malaria pills (mosquitoes love me) and which pills would you recommend or do I just bring some DEET.

Also would need any information with regards to altitude acclimatation. Do I need to get the pills (?) since I already have the pumps for asthma....

Hello Susan :)

Whether DEET is enough depends on whether you will be in a Malaria high risk region. You likely will be if the Health Clinic suggest you take Malaria pills. You can check the WHO(World Health Organisagion) website to find out.

Malarone is the best Malaria prevention drug available at the moment because it has few/no side effects and it is fairly user friendly. It is however expensive. A less expensive but effective alternative would be Doxycycline. The main side effect of this is that it makes your skin sensitive to sun. So if you choose this one use plenty of sun screen.

If you are going to a region where the mosquitos dont transmit any diseases I would choose a different repellant than a DEET one. Putting DEET on your body is not exactly healthy but it is better than getting a nasty disease.

At high altitudes I suggest you dont do too much walking around, especially uphill. If you do get altitude sickness go back down to lower levels. Well, that is what I do anyway.
