Travelling to Thailand with my g/f and her sister for a few weeks in Feb, We are looking for an island to do some diving etc for a week that is accessible from Phuket (cheap flights to there)

The sister wants to do her open water course and we want to do some diving as well. We have stayed at Ko Lanta before and loved it but wanted to stay where we don't have to travel too far to the dives sites.

At the moment i can only really think of Phi Phi, any suggestions?

The purpose of the trip is the girls want to shop for a week then we are diving/beaching it for a week. So we are heading to Bangkok for a week then to an island off Phuket.

I was alternately thinking of going to KL for shopping and then heading to the Perhentian islands for a week. Does anyone think this would be a better option?

Hi, try Phi Phi or Koh Lanta.

Bangkok, fly to Krabi and than on to Phi Phi seems to be a great option. Shopping is better in Bangkok than KL.

Have fun...once you start diving...it's a great drug! Did few amazing trips this years...

Have fun!

I don't agree with PA about the Bangkok vs. KL shopping.... but very similar :) - better T-shirts in BKK though...

But - the weather in Perhentian Islands in February is still officially in the monsoon! - so give it a miss until March.

Phi Phi would be my first choice - also consider Ko Lepi - further south - PP from Phuket is a few hours on a ferry so easiest.

If you enjoy the diving courses - it's the right season for heading out to the Similans on a live-aboard...

Would definitly go for KL too for shopping AND food ..truly fantastic!
Diving in Phi Phi is great, warmly recommend Phi Phi Scuba Diving Center (the yellow one), great team and lots of fun!
Ali, how are Perhentian Islands treating you :-)? Hope you are having fun too! and looking forward to more diving pictures,
