| I had an absolutely amazing experience in Peru. After my trip to the Amazon i am now inspired to help protect it and to maintain these hot spots of biodiversity. | |||||||||||||||

The two most memorable images are first seeing the snaking river out of the aeroplane window, and then seeing a resting Anaconda with my private guide. I’m scared of snakes but wanted to see one after hearing so much about them. I still have the image of it uncoiling and swimming so calmly underneath my canoe a few inches from the water surface, absolutely breathtaking. I’m planning on going back next year to see other parts of the Amazon but will also return to this same lodge, you can view it at www.thinkjungle.com. I’m a biologist and went with the intention of seeing a species of social spider that I had read about. The knowledge of the guides astonished me, I just mentioned what this tiny spider looks like and they took my straight to them. I knew id be overwhelmed with what I was seeing, in terms of biodiversity, and didn’t want to be with a group as I would be constantly stopping. Also, after doing months of research these trips with a private guide weren’t much more expensive than going on group tours and were definitely worth it. Lodges get more expensive the further into pristine rainforest you get. I opted for this one as it was affordable yet far enough away from Iquitos city to have escaped the destructive impact of the rubber boom. I’ve just finished a book by Edward Wilson, a leading biologist from Harvard, who mentions these kinds of trips as potentially saving the rainforest, so here is my little plug for an Amazon vacation. I hope it leaves as bigger mark as it left on me. | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 5517 Msg: #2 136 days ago, August 26th 2008 | Hello Ash :) | I moved this to the forum for those wanting to share travel related links or information in your case.
