I would like to know the train fare for 4-soft sleeper train per person. We will be going first to Shanghai, and then travel towards Xi'an, followed by Beijing and then Hong Kong. Is it also difficult to get train tickets at this particular month. I've read from travel blogs that usually by end of October to November, there is a discount given to foreigners travelling around China. And, i've read from the latest blog that the train room/cabin smell terribly because of the stench coming from the restroom. Is a 4 soft-sleeper room provided with its own private toilet? Is there also a non-smoking area inside the train? Aside from the smell of urine, travellers have complained about people smoking inside the train. I could not just imagine how one can breathe if cigarette smoke is filling-up the room and which is enclosed!!! Hopefully, you could help me on this ;0) I'd be traveling with my mother who has weak heart, so i just want to ensure she will enjoy the trip. Thank you in advance. | greek gal Inga Siden Post Count: 4 Msg: #2 112 days ago, August 14th 2008 | Hi, You can find the train fare on the travelchinaguide website. It is very cheap, even if you go soft berth (1st class). But you have to realize that the conveniences are not the same as in Europe. Old trains, dirty toilets, and people smoke. There are no privat toilets. Also the train stations are old and there are lot's of people around. You may have to carry your bags up stairs and so on. I suggest you go by plane instead, as your mother is not well. Airports are modern, clean, organized. The planes are also modern and just the same standard as in teh US or Europe. Enjoy your trip. | xer03 sjoerd Post Count: 2 Msg: #3 102 days ago, August 24th 2008 | Between the main city's xian, beijing, shanghai and HK there are Deluxe sleepers, where you have two berths per compartment. This is the most cofortable and economical way of travelling, considering that you save hotelroom money. A good resource is www.seat61.com. They have a special page about China, with examples and pics Have fun! | xer03 sjoerd Post Count: 2 Msg: #4 102 days ago, August 24th 2008 | http://www.seat61.com/China.htm | travelingislife BennyZhou Post Count: 26 Msg: #5 102 days ago, August 25th 2008 | Hi Sherma, | 1. From the end of October is a low season for tourist in China. So it maybe easy to buy the trian ticket in advance 3 days. 2. I agree #3 that Xian, Shanghai, Beijing, Hk are big city and also is tourist city. so the train will be cleaner and deluxe. 3. THe soft-sleeper have 4 berths. so if you are two people, you will share with other people unless you buy the one-compartment only for you and your mother. No private toilet for only 4 soft-sleeper. It is piblic toilet for compartment. It is forbidden to smoke inside the compartment. Suggest you fly from Shanghai to XIan and take by the train from XIan to Beijing staying on the train one night. and fly from Beijing to Hong Kong. If you have any other questions or need any help, please mail to me. THANKS! Sherma Sherma Cecile O.
