Bering Strait to Mongolia to Vladivostok

Is there a way to cross from Alaska across the Bering Strait to (I guess) Chutkotchiy (sp?), then on to Mongolia? What would be the best way to do that without joining a tour? say, traveling alone. And visas, what's the deal on visas doing that? My ultimate goal would be to make it down to Vladivostok and get on the Transiberian Railway.

I think the Russian authorities are very finicky about atypical border crossings, I guess it depends on if there is a regular port of entry in the area you want to visit. It would probably be alot easier to arrange it via a travel agent, since you'll probably still need a letter of invitation. You'd do well to check with your local Russian embassy.
