My husband and I will be travelling around Asia, Australia, NZ for about 5 months.
We definitely want to go to Japan, but being so expensive we can't stay there too long.
I am looking for some advice on cheap accomodation in Tokyo, preferrably in lively areas such as Shibuya or Shinjuku but not necessarily as long as still within central Tokyo. We'll only stay there for 4 days so don't want to be spending too much time stuck in transport..
Anybody got any tips?

I stayed at Hotel Monterey Ginza for about US$170.
It's a decent hotel & is located at Ginza Area (Branded Shops).
There's cheaper hotels @ Asakusa area.
You should prolly try to surf the net for more.

I've just come back from 5 weeks in Japan. I would suggest you stay in Shinjuku, it is very easy to get there (Narita Express from airport) and most things you need are there. The bus to Mt Fuji leaves from here as well. We stayed at Shinjuku Washington Hotel it was 15800Y ($AU150) for a double room. The rooms are comfortable it is very near to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Offices, there is internet and laundry available. When you come out of the train station follow the signs to the Gov Office, there are also signs for the Washington Hotel. The Yodabashi Camera shop and Bic Camera are both near the train station and also good restaurants in the area.
Some of the business hotels are good in the area as well (and usually quite reasonably priced).
From Shinjuku you can take the metro to the Ginza, Tsukiji Fish Market, Sony building and others.
