Hello Quentin :)

Maybe a copy of the Lonely Planet Guide for China would be a useful purchase for you. It would give you practical information about accomodation, transport etc as well as ideas about what to see in China. It is available in most bookshops around the world for around 30 Euros.

Hi, Quentin

I agree with Phil. I was in Yunnan (Dali, Lijiang & Kunming) a few years ago. The landscape is breathtaking and the people are lovely.

If you'll go to Shanghai, I recommend Zhou Zhuang, a small town near Shanghai. It's called Venice of the Orient, with a history of over 1400 years. Most of the houses there were build in the Ming and Qing dynasties, the last two dynasties in China.

Here's the websit: www.zhouzhuang.com

Bon Voyage!

Wow, three weeks is a long time . You will have a lot of fun in September in China. Meanwhile it is not hot in September. So China is a huge country, there are a lot of thins to see. It is up to your interest . But usuall if ypeople are first time to come to China, they always land in Beijing at first, spending one week or so , visiting the Forbidden city, the temple of heaven and the Great wall hiking. Xi'an is a nice option too for the terra cotta army and city wall. And Shanghai, the city where western and eastern meet. But what I recommend is about the city tour. Still there are a lot of places you'd better not miss it. September is almost the ideal season to travel in China. If you love photography and minitory culture, I strongly recommend you to travel to Sichuan, yun'nan and Tibet, etc, south west of China, a mystery of China. You may find some perfect itineraries by looking at :<snip>
Have fun:)

Reasons to visit Guilin, China:
Guilin refers to Osmanthus trees forest, as all over the place is filled with this kind of trees, and the blooming season is between late September to early November.

1. Guilin is one of the 10 Major Scenic Spots and Historical Sites in China and one of four major must-see cities in China recommended by World Tourism Organization.
2. Guilin is the only place within China that has beautiful limestone mountains together with beautiful rivers.

3. Guilin area is home to the ethnic Zhuang, Yao, Miao and Dong people and is featured with colorful and varied national traditions with rich and elegant folk customs.

4. Li River is the symbol of China's natural landscape. Cruise downstream on serene Li River from Guilin to Yangshuo and feast your eyes on green towering pinnacles; crystal waters and bamboo groves. Water buffalo patrol the fields, ducks paddle on the waters, farmers reap paddies, cormorant fish and kids splash in the water. You will be imbued with a strong sens of returning to the nature of the Garden of Eden.

5. Yangshuo of Guilin is becoming the backpackers' Mecca. Relax yourself in one of the cafes in simple and unsophisticated old West Street. Drink beer or coffee, telling your stories or listen to travel stories with the people from all over the world.

6. Enjoy a leisurely bike ride in Yangshuo countryside to appreciate its charm: karst peaks, villages, rivers, rice fields and friendly farmers - immersing you in nature and culture as you pedal along.

7. There are thousands of hills and caves to explore. You can bathe in mud in the water cave as well as rock climbing in the hills.

8. Trek the magnificent terraced fields in Longsheng County. The terraced fields are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountaintop.

9. Watch the "Impression Lightshow " China's largest outdoor performance with the Li River and mountains as a natural stage and backdrop. The director of the lightshow is Zhang Yimong who is the director of the Opening Ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

10. Sample delicious local specialties, such as Steam Li River Fish, Beer Fish, Snail with special flavor, Fried Shrimp, Braised Pork.

Hi Quentin,
Well places like Beijing and Shanghai are must see's. Li Jiang, in Yunan is also especially beautiful. I read an article on Inner Mongolia though which sounds fascinating. <snip>I havn't been yet, but its definetly next on my list and since you're going to be in china for three weeks, I'm sure you can spend a couple of days there. Its bound to be unforgetable.
Dont miss Xian and its terracota warriors either!

hi there, i agree with leebola. I think that Beijing and Shanghai could represent the current developed China. There are many heritage site to see in Beijing too, like the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Summer Palace ( Yiheyuan ), etc. Besides, the local food in Beijing are delicious like the Beijing or Peking roast duck and instant-boiled-mutton. Imagine that the roast duck are being sliced into thin crisp pieces and put it in your mouth. The skin is crispy yet the meat is tender, is quite hard to describe that kind of feel when you eat it. Their instant-boiled-mutton is also delicious as the mutton is very tender and it’s being sliced into thin pieces too, and being instantly-boiled in hot soup, yummy. Apart from that, I have bought a a4trip guidebook and I really relied mostly on it. I found the guidebook really helpful as it’s brief but clear enough to let me plan for my trip. I bought the guidebook from a4trip dot com. Hope that it will helps.

If you are thinking about visiting Jiuzhai Valley (or Jiuzhaigou) National Park in Sichuan you can visit http://www.jiuzhai.com/language/english/index.html for updated information. There have been many untrue reports circulating about earthquake affects. Buses and planes are operating, hotels are open. Neither Jiuzhai Valley or Huanglong National Parks were damaged in the May earthquake. Songpan is also in full operation.

Depends what kind of traveling you like to do... you could stay three weeks in Beijing if you really want to soak up the history.

Do you like scenery? hiking/trekking? culture? going out/nightclubs?

Historic China: Beijing and Xian
Up and Coming China: Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau
Scenic China: Guilin/Yangshuo, Jiuzhaigou, Huangshan, Hangzhou/Suzhou
Culture/Minority cultures: Guizhou, Yunnan
Trekking/adventure: Yunnan, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Tibet, areas of Sichuan

Xinjiang is fascinating and unique as well. Really interesting part of China.

And much, much more! I would do a mixture of the above to get a taste of what China is really about. Start with Beijing for three days, stop by Xian for two days, then go to Guilin/Yangshou for a few days, and head to Yunnan for 9 days. End your trip in Shanghai (and stop by one of the canal towns) or Hong Kong, as those are easy hubs to get home.

Have fun!

The only concrete plans i have to date is staying at<snip>for at least a few days. I've heard good things about it. I've read alot about places to visit, but can anyone offer me other options for accommodations? I'm very interested in China's history.
Thanks ... Sam
