Anyone with experience in the area? | Also, anyone with experience organizing their own long backpacking trips in Northern Africa? Any other suggestions for mountain ranges to target besides the High Atlas? I am planning a 12-18 month North Africa/Middle East trip starting around February of 09. This trip would then probably fall into the summer of 09 or 10. And advice would be appreciated. If you are comfortably with it, it's really easy to organize your own trek. Just buy a map, take a taxi to Oukmaidien or Imlil and start walking. If you are planning a multi-day hike, be sure to take a tent and cooking equipment! Otherwise, in imlil you can organize a guided walk without any problems! We climbed Mount Toubkal in 2 days from Imlil. We went without a guide and, assuming you have basic hiking experience, I would suggest that you can do the same. As Rutger suggests, longer trips are also possible to do by yourself. There is a helpful website which I will dig out for you... Good luck with the planning, Ruth.
