I think you When you travel to Indochina - Cambodia, Laos, Viet Nam..., you'll never return with anything more precious than memories. | Nice day. Kim Uyen Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #3 99 days ago, July 8th 2008 | Hello Ctgooner :) | With the amount of time you have I would go for one of the following. Some variety like getting a round the world ticket and hitting a few continents. Or an experience that is time consuming such as travelling overland from Europe to India or Thailand. If you are under 30 you could travel in India for a slow 6 months of easy going travel and then work in Australia for another 6. Mel IUMy23 Maya Northen Post Count: 209 Msg: #4 99 days ago, July 8th 2008 | Hi Ctgooner, | I would absolutely hit either India (haven't been, but DYING to go!) or some other areas of Asia such as Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam. Australia and New Zealand would be fantastic as well. I traveled alone in Asutralia quite a bit as well as in New Zealand for several weeks and I loved it. The people are wonderfully friendly and since they speak English, there's no language barrier, minus some of the different terms/sayings you may not recognize. Of course Europe has a ton of phenomenal destinations. The main issue with Europe right now (depending on where you are from - I'm looking from a US$ perspective) is the currency exchange. Most destinations in Asia, as well as Australia and New Zealand may have a better exchange rate than the Euro, pound, Swiss Franc or other currencies in Europe. There are also some amazing destinations in Central/South America, such as Argentina and Costa Rica, where you can stretch your money a bit further too. We had a thread on here a while back that listed people's most famous cities - it might be a good reference, not necessarily to hit those specific cities but to see what everyone mentioned and which areas most appeal to you. I am not so good at finding the links to the threads and reposting but I could give it a shot. I know Mel is way better at this :-) Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #5 99 days ago, July 8th 2008 | Is this the one you are looking for Maya? | 10 most famous cities IUMy23 Maya Northen Post Count: 209 Msg: #6 99 days ago, July 8th 2008 | Ah thanks Mel! i totally forgot to look for it after I posted! | Ruth from Wales Ruth John Post Count: 105 Msg: #7 99 days ago, July 8th 2008 | I am 10 months into a year long trip to South and Central America and cannot recommend it highly enough. Ever dreamt of seeing Machu Picchu at dawn, hiking up volcanoes, drinking some of the world's best wine, playing with penguins, learning to tango, seeing massive waterfalls, etc, etc??! If so, then you need to come here... | [Edited: 23:18 - Ruth from Wales - I can't spell] ctgooner C Post Count: 6 Msg: #8 98 days ago, July 9th 2008 | Thanks for all the replies. Its all really starting to sink in now. Cant control my excitment!! | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #9 96 days ago, July 11th 2008 | So, where are you going to go, Ctgooner? | ctgooner C Post Count: 6 Msg: #10 95 days ago, July 12th 2008 | I was thinking of starting in either thailand or vietnam (ive been to thailand a few times efore, so ill be breaking myself in), then on to cambodia and laos. After this I was going to let what i fancied at the time. But im thinking then in no particular order, Japan, Some of china, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Some of india and then on to Australia and NZ. After this im considering doing the africa thing for some volunteer work. Ive got as much time as i like to complete the trip and a fairly good budget, so I should be able to get most oft done | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #11 95 days ago, July 12th 2008 | A good budget and as much time as you want! That is every travellers dream situation. :) | IUMy23 Maya Northen Post Count: 209 Msg: #12 94 days ago, July 13th 2008 | That sounds amazing, i am jealous! Just make sure to give yourself enough time and budget to get any visas you might need (e.g. you generally need one for China even if you just have an aiport layover there... crazy!). Other than that, I think it's amazing that you can go as you fancy! | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #13 93 days ago, July 14th 2008 | I didnt know that about Chinese visas. It is crazy for sure. :( | IUMy23 Maya Northen Post Count: 209 Msg: #14 92 days ago, July 15th 2008 | Yes they are very strict on Chinese visas. I have to be careful when I'm booking clients to Asia to make sure that they do not have a layover in China. There are other countries that have taken similar tactics, but China is the most "notorious" for it. | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #15 92 days ago, July 15th 2008 | Other countries too! I didnt know that. I would never have considered that I might need a visa for just a layover. I hope Russia is not one of those counties because I will be at Moscow airport for a few hours on my way to Kyrgyzstan. | Mike and Sarah Michael Courtney & Sarah Ellison Post Count: 60 Msg: #16 90 days ago, July 18th 2008 | Sounds fantastic! I really wanted to follow the sun for a year when I was planning my trip, so that is exactly what I did and with the exception of some freak weather (who says global warming isn't real!) it has worked and meant my rucksack doesn't have bulky clothers weighing it down!! Also think about how much time you want to spend in English speaking countries (I think of this as my 'lazy travel' phase as everything is so easy!) Definitely an exciting time planning your year off and enjoy every minute! Remember too, if you get somewhere you don't like or want to move on, it is easy to change your mind. Mike and I didn't plan on seeing anywhere in South or Central America on our trip, but after speaking to so many people who loved it thought we would change our tickets out of Oz to include time in Chile, Argentina, Peru & Costa Rica. The best decision I have made this year & now Argentina is one of my favourite countries! :-) IUMy23 Maya Northen Post Count: 209 Msg: #17 87 days ago, July 20th 2008 | Mel, i do not think Russia requires it but I would double check. Also, I am going based off of requirements for US citizens. I'm not sure if you are citizen of Ireland, Germany or both, but that might definitely be different than U.S. Your best bet is to call the Russian Consulate in your home country (or country of citizenship) and ask. China is the one that comes to mind off the top of my head but requirements are changing so quickly these days it's tough to keep track! | Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #18 87 days ago, July 20th 2008 | Thanks Maya :) | I am a citizent of Ireland only. TravelNow Pawel Nadstoga Post Count: 7 Msg: #19 63 days ago, August 13th 2008 | If you are under 30 you could travel in India for a slow 6 months of easy going travel... That made me curious. Didn't have a clue they don't let older people in :)Mell Mel Fla Post Count: 4155 Msg: #20 63 days ago, August 13th 2008 | Hello Pawel :) | I said that because you cant get the temporary work permit to work in Australia if you are over 30, as far as I know. The age thing was nothing to do with India. India was just part to the year plan. 6 months in India because that is how long the visas generally last before they need to be extended. It is the efficient amount of time to spend in India, in my opinion. So, what would your own ideal trip be like? :) Mel 24 Replies: « back 1 2 next » | Number of Users: 11 | Number of Posts: 24 24 Replies: « back 1 2 next » | | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
