What to do? Where to stay?

I'm heading to CR with my boyfriend and another couple for 10 days in August (2-12). This is our current tentative plans: First thing on the 3rd - we head north and spend 3-4 nights in La Fortuna/Monteverde. We can do a zip line tour up there, go to the cloudforest and hike, and one night sit in the hot springs (either Baldi or Tabacon). Then we head back to San Jose and do a white water tour from there to the Caribbean coast. We could spend 2 nights in Tortuguero and take a canoe tour of the national park - which was really cool, but the only thing to do there. Then we could head down the Caribbean coast to Puerto Viejo/Cahuita to the beaches to chill until the 11th, when you and Travis will head back to San Jose to catch your flight on the 12th.

Any suggestions for specific places to stay in any of the above locations? Also, any particular companies to go through for the activities we are planning to do?

Thank you in advance.

Hey!

Your trip sounds like it will be a great adventure. I spent 5 days in Costa Rica in May and stayed around Monteverde & La Fortuna. There was loads to do so all days were filled. Your trip is packing loads in & I'm not sure if you are aware of the conditions of the roads in CR. A journey between La Fortuna and MV could take more than 4 hours. How are you planning to get around? If by car, I recommend a 4x4.

In La Fortuna there are FREE hot springs if you don't mind the lack of luxury and not being brought a cocktail to enjoy! A secret place not signposted, let me know if you want the details. "Sevatura" was the zipline/canopy tour company we used in Monteverde, they are the only ones with a tarzan swing! Alot of fun. I would definitely recommend a coffee tour with "Cafe Monteverde" co-operative.

What sort of accommodation are you looking for? If you are going to be staying in hostels, Pura Vida in La Fortuna is quiet with massive beds and very clean, above a chinese restaurant with views of the volcano. In Monteverde we stayed at Pension Monteverde, a lively hostel. Not the most clean place I have been, but adequate and I didn't have to keep flip flops on in the shower!!!!! Good atmosphere though and very friendly staff, we met alot of people there.

Enjoy and if you need any more info let me know.

Your going to love your trip. All can be done in ten days just gonna have to shorten up the trip to arenal if you want to do san jose (rafting) tortuguero and PV. In that case it might be tough to do both Monteverde and La Fortuna. tortuguero was one of my favorites in CR, very peaceful two nights will be more than enough and you might be able to do a 2 day one night package with http://www.lagunatortuguero.com/ kinda pricy but worth it. from there you can go straight to Puerto Viejo and just chill. Stay at rockin jay's if your in the mood for some fun. Rent a bike and cruise throughout the town and head south (by bike) for some gorgeous beaches.
