I am going to Thailand soon and want to buy a guidebook. Which do you think is best. I have been told that the lonely planet is the best, but then there is the option of Thailand or the one titled 'on a shoestring'

Advice would be great, and any other suggestions

Thanks Vicki

If you're only going to Thailand, just get the Lonely Planet: Thailand, because the South East Asia on a Shoestring covers all of SE Asia; it's much heavier than the Thailand book, and also has less information about each place because of fitting in so much overall information. The Thailand specific guide has more maps of towns, more info on accommodation and eating places, etc etc

Personally I'd recommend the Rought Guide over the Lonely Planet. Much better if you're travelling alone and the writers have actually been to the country.. some restaurants can simply pay a few quid to be listed in other books so you don't know whether its a genuine listing or not. I've just got back from Vietnam - the worst place I stayed was in the LP .. the best was in the RG.

Hello Vicki :)

The On a Shoestring guide is by Lonely Planet.
As Debbie suggests, get a Lonely Planet or On a Shoestring guide which only covers Thailand rather than the one which covers all of SE Asia if you dont intend to go to the other SE Asian countries in the next while.

As Kaija suggests the Rough Guide books are also good.

How good any of the books are depends on who updated them. The quality of the books varies. For some countries the Lonely Planet is currently better and for others the Rough Guide is currently better.

Vicki,
I like LP more , but shouldn't rely too much on it.

Hi Princess K,
I was waiting so long to read your travel journals for the time after Hue.
I hope everything was all right with you. Cheers!

forget the books, use the internet and then your sense of adventure.

If you aren't going to be on holiday longer than a month why not check a travel guide out from your hometown library? If your library is like the one in my town you will have several choices of travel guides.

I like the Lonely Planet TG.
