Hi Suzanne

I went to Cambodia last year, Only for Five Days tho!.. a few ppl in my work group got sick unfortunately but most of us were fine, you just have to follow the rules - Like dont drink water from the Tap, Always sealed bottled water in SEA anyway. and be careful of street Vendors. my take on is that they are fine for Local ppl but like we westerns have different stomach to them so avoid street vendors if you can! but some ppl say that the best food in asia is the street vendors so its a Funny one

and just a tip go see your doctor and 6 weeks before you leave for Asia, tell them exactly where you will be going and they will give you any needed Vax or meds

I followed the rules and felt fine! but i was only there for 5 days! Unfortunately :(

PS - Intrepid Recommend using tap water and buying water purification Tablets as its more environmentally friendly (no bottles).. i don't know how good this is tho so look in to that one

You need more than 6 weeks to get the vaccinations, for example Hep B must be done over 2 months and it is necessary!
Injection at 0 months, 1 month, 2 months, then you're done.
Rabies must be done for 3 injections over a month.

Oh and usual recommendations, as Antzzz1 mentioned, bottled water, make sure food is cooked hot, etc. No different to here but your stomach will take time to get used to the different bacteria in the region. Just common sense - no different to your own country really!!! ;)

I travelled for 10 months in Asia and my first 6 months were in India - I was terrified of getting ill before I went there, and had heard so many horror stories from people, and kept visualising myself ending up in some god-awful hospital somewhere, or dying alone in a guest house room! I refused to eat anything but toast for the first 2 days, I was so convinced I'd get sick - then I realised I was being ridiculous and I had to eat properly. I was absolutely fine for my whole trip! I got a small tummy bug for a couple of days, 4 months into my travelling, but nothing too serious. After that, I had odd patches of dodgy tummy from time to time, but nothing that kept me in bed or anything.
My advice is DON'T WORRY - there's so much potentially to worry about with going away, if you start thinking about it, but you're about to have the time of your life and so many adventures.
As the others said, just be sensible - drink sealed bottled water etc etc. If you eat where the locals eat, the food is usually good and freshly cooked. No-one can ever predict whether or not they're going to be unlucky and pick up a bug or another illness - the fact is, it's partly being sensibly careful (but not to the point that it ruins your fun), and partly luck. And all of these places do have doctors, medical centres, pharmacies and hospitals!!! Lonely Planet always lists the local medical centres and pharmacies, and guest houses usually have the names of local doctors - unless you're really going off the beaten track into the back of beyond, which you probably won't, you'll always be around healthcare, so if something happens, you'll be looked after! And you'll generally be in places where there are other travellers, and people look out for each other - when I got sick in India, another traveller I'd only met that day brought me round some rehydration salts and loo paper(!) and checked up on me to make sure I was ok - so you won't be alone.
Also, the food is SO good and tasty in Asia, don't miss out on that - it was a real highlight of my trip!

Spend your time getting excited, not worried - you're about to have an amazing time! :)

Suzanne, all of the above advice is really good but, if you are still concerned about getting sick, have a look on the web for a product called "Travelan". We intend to take it with us when we travel later in the year.
