Hey all, Im in the early stages of looking into India. I know Id like to travel to Ladakh, but I dont know much about it and I dont know anybody who has been there. I guess that Im just looking for your recomandations as to where to go in N. India. I will be flying from Bangkok, so if you know anything about how to go about getting tickets on the cheap, let me know. Much appreciated.

Aaron,

Air India express which is a low cost carrier flies Bangkok - Kolkata. You can check their website for the fares. However, you will have to either catch a train or another flight from Kolkata to Delhi as there are no flights from Kolkata to Leh. If you don't mind paying more, Jet Airways can fly you from Bangkok - Delhi directly.

Once in Delhi, there are 2 ways to get to Ladakh. You can either catch a bus. Not sure how long they take but a rough guess would be anywhere up to 72 hours. The roads are not the best and i can assure you by the time you get to your destination, you will be very very tired. It wouldn't cost you much on the bus though.

The other option is to fly from Delhi - Leh. Indian Airlines and couple other airlines fly this route. The flight's only about an hour. You will pay more but the views of Himalayas from the plane is absolutely worth it. A lot of people from Indian Army and Airforce regularly fly this route, so don't be unsettled if you see the soldiers on the plane.

For other general information about Leh & Ladakh and other places to see in the region, search the internet.

Hope this helps.

Dear Aaron,

Fortunately, I just went there 25.5.08 from BKK-Delhi-Srinagar-Ladak-Delhi-Bkk,

BKK-Delhi ***Thai airways, Jet airway, Indian Air the price depend on the advance booking is the tight schedule it 's quite expensive and July -Sep is the high season for Ladakh so the seat maybe hard to find . My flight is Thai airways B 19300 by agent at Khaosarn Rd. and my checking Jet and Indian cheaper than TG only B1000.

Delhi-Srinagar or Ladakh by domestic flight (Air Deccan , Indian air , Spritejet, Kingfisher) my flight is Air Deccan
Delhi-Srinagar and Srinagar- Ladakh is Indian air the price around 3000-4000 Rupees. Booking by internet the air website or www.makemytrip.com

Ladakh , can go by bus from Delhi www.jktourist.org pass Manali take 1 days the bus depart at night and will be there at the next day , The road wiil be opened in July -Sep coz the weather.

Accomodation is not expensive and many classed to find I choosed B class the price is 600 rupees no a/C no heater but provide you hot water 2 times a day.

Food , Tibetien and Hindu the taste is not good for me,Thai food is the best taste.

Cultural , Natural and Monestries.

People , Friendly.

Security, Safety but you will see many soldiers near the border whenever you go to the interest place such as Pankong lake it's border China, India and Pakisatan and need to do the permit paper by agent before 1 day.

I wish you get more info however you can contact me if you need more info. or picutres.

I went last year to Ladakh to do some trekking... I can assure you, that this place is completely different from the rest of India, and sometimes you wonder whether you are in India or in Tibet...

In any case, its a great place even if you don't go on longer trekking. A lot of sightseeing around Leh, some very nice trips to Pangong lake and Nubra valley. Just acclimatise well in Leh and be prepared for some high altitudes... For example, the road to Nubra valley goes over Kardung La, highest pass in the world (over 5600m).

Depending on time, I could suggest you to fly to Leh (Srinagar and Kasmir would be also a great destination), spend around there a few days and acclimatise well, do some monastery sightseeing in the valley (from Alchi to Hemis), go to Nubra valley, Pangong lake... you can go with bicycles down from Kardung La to Leh... in any case a lot to do, even if you don't go trekking... And if you decide to do trekking, this just opens you lots of new opportunities...

For the end of the stay, i would suggest a two day trip down to Manali... its not an easy ride, but certainly unforgettable scenery and experience...

Regarding other things...
Food excellent - you have a choice from hindi, kashmeeri to tibetan food. I loved it.
Weather is cold, even in the summer nights can be quite cold.
People friendly, however not so approachable as in the rest of India...
Security should not be a problem... its safe, however army is very present and you need permit to get to certain places.
Communication is also not a problem, there are plenty of internet cafes in Leh (however slow), postcards also came. Your mobile phone will be unusable in this region, as you cannot connect to Ladaki network. If you want to use mobile, you have to buy ladakhi SIM card. This is supposed to be due to security issues and sensitive border area.

your trip looks very nice.

yes , Leh is the different from the other part of India such as Delhi.

I'm very regret because I didn't have time to Nubra valley and can't go back to Delhi by bus pass Manali since the road is closed.

North India, India's most popular tourist circuit including the cities like Delhi, Agra, Shimla, Varanasi, Lucknow, Jaipur as well. If you are first time, better book any special tour package from an authentic tour operator. Presently the monsoon season has arrived in this region, so take care from the rains. Carry sufficient amount of clothes including rain- coat, umbrella and avoid the water-logged places.
