I’m new to these types of forums but I must share a story with you that may benefit anyone who travels internationally. Recently, I experienced a medical emergency in China. Obviously, there was a great deal of concern being overseas in a foreign country. The reason I went to China was to teach English so I had a small amount of knowledge about speaking Chinese, but my skills were very limited. One particular day, I experienced a mini stroke. Luckily, I had a traveling companion who was able to take me to the nearest hospital in Xiamen.

Before my traveling companion and I departed for China, she was very thorough about preparations. One such preparation was purchasing travel medical insurance. At first, I didn’t think it was necessary but she convinced me it was a good idea.

Despite going through such a scary ordeal, I was relieved that I had purchased the insurance. My companion contacted our travel insurance provider (Seven Corners) who worked with the hospital and doctors to make sure I had the appropriate care and testing, as well as a translator to help me communicate with my doctors. After three days of stabilizing care, I was evacuated from Xiamen.

I have fully recovered now, thankfully, but I thought it would be important to stress the benefit of having my travel insurance. It’s like an American Express card motto when I travel now: I never leave home without it! I really don’t know what would have happened without it. I do know how much it would have cost me, though. The evacuation alone from the Xiamen hospital would have cost nearly $100,000. Needless to say, I still feel very grateful and wanted to share my experience with you. I don’t know much more about travel insurance, yet it’s definitely worth investigating if you travel internationally.

I wish you all safe and happy travels!
