I will be travelling in Cancun, Mexico this summer and hoping to get advise from travelers who have been to Cancun and have actually drove/backpacked around the peninsula. The more information the better. I'm thinking about visiting the Chichen Itza and Isla Mujeres. How, where, and what is it to do there for couple of days.

Thanks.

Hi,

I run a site http://www.mexicovacationpackage.just4unow.com which should give you plenty of information to help you. Take a look when you get a chance

I have been doing some research and have found informations that were helpful. The only thing I couldn't find is a cheap travel guide tour to Chichen Itza.

Hey, i haven't been to cancun so cant help you there, but i have traveled round the peninsula a bit. Transport is very easy, there is heaps of cheap buses going basically everywhere, and also collectivos (shared mini buses) are good if they are going your way. I wouldnt bother driving, ive heard bad story's about mexican car hire company's and plus its not worth it when the buses are good (unless wanna get right off the track).
As far as chichen itza goes i stayed in valladolid and caught the first bus in the morning, which got there early enough so it wasn't to busy. As far as tours go, there were some people offering there services at the front gate, but i didnt bother. a combination of the lonely planet and listening in to other tours was more than enough info for me.
I would recommend coba and uxmal ruins as well, i thought they were more impressive and certainly less crowded. good luck

You're quite a smart traveler. I think I might just do that and figure out how to get there. How about Cenotes? can you get an easy access on one of them? where would the nearest one from Chichen Itza, maybe a walking distance? I don't mind hiking/trekking the area.

There are actually 2 cenotes at chichen, but unfortunately you cannot swim in them. There are a few in and around valladolid which were good, one called dzitnup which is just out of town was nice and good relief from the heat. We got bikes and rode around the town and also visited the centoes. Not sure if tulum is on your list but there is also so nice ones around that area including the biggest one in the area. If you decide to go there the bus/collectivo can drop you off there, or catch a cab from town.
Along most of the main roads i often saw signs advertising cenotes, not sure how much or how good they are, but there are alot in the area.
I found yucatan lonely planet helpful, even though its old is still good to help plan.

How far is Valladolid from Cancun, do you know? I wonder if that's going to be an easy travel by bus/cab from our hotel. I went to a couple of book store around here and found no lonely planet guide book for Yucatan Peninsula. I did get a book that has enough info to travel around the peninsula, I think. The places I am hoping to go to are Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Chichen Itza. I only have couple of days to wander around few places. I am attending a wedding in Cancun. I'd rather be going to interesting places than just soaking in the sun or at the beach with Pina Colada. I think I will have enough time to do that when we get there and at the wedding day. Too bad I only get to stay for 3 days. If I like it, I'll definitely go back and finish what I have started. Have you always travel in Central America?

with only 3 days id maybe give valladolid a miss and just spend a day in chichen. Valladoid is about 2 hours by bus from cancun, and chichen would be about an hour longer. LP says a bus from cancun to chichen is about $8US, id definatly try and catch an early one. Ive been around this area for few months now and am loving it, but also traveled oz, SE asia, and north america. 3 days will be great, but could easy spend month exploring that area, it is really beautiful, very nice place for a wedding! Have fun

I'd like to camp on a beach anywhere from Morelos south to Tulum. Is this legal? Will I be safe?

personally iv never had a problem, but.....not sure if its illegal, probably
i saw some people camping in tulum but there is not that many good places to camp as most is taken up by hotels etc. I wouldn't recommend doing it alone and definatly don't leave tent, belongings etc unattended. Obviously cant be guaranteed to be safe but should be fine if in a group, good luck

Jordan,

When you camped, was it on the beach or elsewhere?

i have camped on the western beaches in mexico and also other places around mexico, but in that specific area i didnt camp with a tent, but used a hammock on the edge of beach. well worth looking into as its damn hot! and also easier to pack up in the morning as usually have to make an early start

Makes sense.

Curious: When you say you "usually have to make an early start" ... what, do you have to head off to work?

camping by the beach sounds like an adventure and a cheap way to live off the island. Anybody who will be in Cancun by July 15th and go on a day trip at Chichen Itza? I'd love a company, preferrably bilingual. He He he!

hehe luckily no work at the mo! but would go to ruins, move on to next town etc and couldn't leave my stuff lying around. is the only downfall.....where ever you go then so does your bag. I cant say ive ever seen the sun rise when i have a nice comfy bed in a house.....but camping seems to change my body clock and especially in a hammock the sun usually wakes me up!
Unfortunately wont be in the area, could try posting in the looking for travel companions forum, but it is pretty easy to meet people there
