Hi two of my friends and I are planning on travelling at around June next year for 4-5 months. The plan is to go to mainly East Coast America for the first 2-3 months then fly to Austria and Switzerland for the remaining 2 months possibly with some travel around Europe. We are keen to go snowboarding/skiing in Europe and other recreational stuff like that in America. How much do you think we will need each as a bare minimum and how could we go about getting short term work in america if needed? Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Where are you from? Your currency makes a huge difference. (Thank G.W. for turning the dollar into toilet paper.)

It all depends on how lavishly you want to live. During my travels through the western world I try to live as inexpensively as possible and have always bugeted $130-150 USD a day for food, activities, lodging, transportaion, and all other expenses that may arise. Your one advantage is that train travel along the east coast of the US is extremely inexpensive...about $450 for a month pass as opposed to $1300 a month for europe...check out www.amtrak.com for US train info. If you stay in hostels, have a backpacking mentality, and watch your expenses you could probabaly do the US side of the trip for $2000-2200 a month. of course certain activities will drive that number up considerably such as renting a car or flying between cities in the US. If you came to the US with a budget of $3300 or so a month and still stayed in hostels you would be better off. If it helps, I am planning a trip around the world and plan to stay in western europe for three months...for that part of my trip I plan to have $10,000. As far as finding work in America I don't have a whole lot of info on that since I am a US citizen and have never tried to get work as a non citizen in the US... hope this info helps.
