At the moment and nobody knows exactly for how long the Train to the Clouds is closed.
The way it goes until Socompa station is possible to be done on a 4wd vehicule and of course with some knowledge of the area.
Since last April weather has improved in the region allowing to be able to reach such places in the high Puna.
If you want more info on tours through that rough incredible area pls don´t hesitae on contacting me.
Cheers and good winds.

Nico.

Hi Nico

thanks for your post on the Tren de las Nubes. I am currently in Buenos Aires, and planning a trip in the Salta area at the beginning of June. I read it was possible to rent a car to go through more or less the same route as the train..Ruta 51 if I'm correct. Do you know if that's possible indeed to rent a private car for the day and do that..or it's a bit rugged and difficult to navigate without knowing ?
Thanks for any info or tip on the area !
cheers
Pascal

Put it this way, they won´t rent it to you knowing you are going to go there.
An the other thing, is a lot better if you actuallyknow the area.
I do those kinds of trips if you happen to be interested.

This is not to scare you or anyhing like it, but temperatures ver there tend to be pretty cold at night (-20ºc) sometimes and you need to know where to stop in order not to have problems the next day with the car.

my email: <snip>

Ask away what ever you need anyway.

Cheers, Nico.

Hi, couldn't help but notice the comment on freezing temps at night in Salta. Is camping a possibility in the beginning of August? Thx!
