Walking the Inca Trail unaided, advice on accommodation/food and water.

From what I have gathered it is going to take about a week to walk the Inca Trail. Do we need a tent? Or is there adequate accommodation en route such as tea houses? Is there adequate shops to hire sleeping bags and tents in the area? Would we need to bring all the food and water and carry it for the journey from the outset?

I may be doing some volunteer work in Mera and need to get to there from Cuenca, and then go from Mera to Quito when I\'m done. I\'ve seen some routes from Quito to Mera referenced, but nothing concrete (with schedules, routes, etc) for Cuenca to Mera - anyone have any resources or suggestions? Thanks.

Having just spent a month in Ecuador, busing from Columbia to Vilcabama, our next trip will be to spend a lot more time in the areas we liked most----Banos, Otavallo, Vilcabama etc.
