We had a great dinner last night with Jean Marie (John-Maree) and Brenda. It was from several regions of France. A really lively pair who took a lot of joy in having us over. A seven course meal is typical here. Aperiff was nuts, some crisp veggie bites and 2 kinds of wine. Then a tomato salad followed by quiche and wonderful beef Burgandy. Topped off as always with cheese and a different wine. Then we had desert, an apple tartin and also cheesecake served with an apple cider wine. Toward the end of the evening, (it is after midnight now) we had hot tea. Great conversation throughout and lots of fun tales from a couple who met in the peace corps in Africa. She was born in San Francisco, but is truly French now. About ... read more

Hi again, well i had another enchanting day in glorious Spain. though i was slightly heartbroken because I couldnt find a decent winter coat. In case you were wondering why I need yet another coat (I did bring 3!!!) the reason is because my winter coat that i have been toting around for 2 months, joined the MIA (missing in action) list. Actually it is not missing, it is the San Sebastian train station, and now some chilly spaniard (with a mullet I am sure) is wearing it. Dont those mullet people know that my jacket isnt meant to be worn with a mullet. oh well. Things missing so far in order of importance: 1. cocoon of love (but i did find a much worse quality replacement courtesy of the Spain train system. 2. Winter jacket ... read more

Realizing that I only have a little over a month or so here in Berlin, and being reminded of the darkest period of German history, I decided, it would be good to visit one of the German concentration camps. Just north of Berlin is the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, which has been turned today into a memorial. It was a “perfect” day for such an outing too. Blustery fall winds and an overcast sky with a cold, unpleastant rain falling in the morning, which left a damp effect on the rest of the day, even after it cleared up. I got to the town of Oranienberg about 2pm. The camp is about a two kilometer walk from the train station and I got to see a little bit of what small-town Germany is like. It has a ... read more

Weekend before last we decided to see a little more of Germany and took a ride to Bamberg, about an1 1/2 hour drive north of Ansbach. Bamberg was founded about 900 A.D. and was fortunate not to suffer any bombing damage during World War II. A thousand-year cultural and architectural site, UNESCO declared Bamberg a world heritage city in 1976. It is a beautiful town with unforgettable small and winding alleys with picturesque views at almost every turn. A city of about 70,000, Bamberg’s residence brag that their city is built on seven hills like Rome, has a network of waterways like Venice, and that it’s Altstadt (Old Town) is as beautiful as Prague’s. Although we only spent a couple hours sightseeing, it is a place that we definitely plan on returning to for a ... read more

Peeking out of the train window as the sun came up this morning we were greeted with a beautiful surprise. We were entering a real life winter-wonderland. Snow and ice blanketed the entire countryside. The half-frozen rivers we passed we steaming in the cold winter air and the small wooden houses outside all had little chimneys billowing with white smoke. It looked like a scene from a fairy tale. As the sun appeared in a hazy shade of pink, we could see people walking along the train lines bundled in big wool coats with giant fur hats. Welcome to Russia!! The train ride from Ulaanbataar seemed much longer than the 36 hours it was. I came back from the Gobi with a very bad cold which made sitting in a small train compartment with three other ... read more

Hola After a large hangover from a great leaving do and some last minute packing "concerns" we boarded the plane for our first port of call Espana. We arrived in Barcelona to find that the weather wasn't so bad and despite the both of us having colds we managed to cover most of the city in 2 days in great japonese fashion! We can definitely recomend the Sagrada Familia (Gaudi Cathedral in the centre). You have to climb to the top and see the amazing views of the city. Everyone thought Mel looked Spanish and started yabbering on at her...poor Mel only knows three words in Spanish none of which were appropriate (Paella, Vino and Gracias). The next stop was Madrid and because of the lack of time we decided to spend the main day in ... read more

I can’t tell you how much I now appreciate taking a shower with no one else in the room (although I have adapted quite well I think to sharing a bathroom with 30 other girls). For my birthday, my mom rented me a hotel room and I had one of the girl’s from my team, Talitha accompany me. I was only there one night but I took a shower three times just because I had access to a bathroom I could shut the door to and lock. We stayed at the Grand Hotel, which is supposed to be one of the nicest (if not the nicest) hotel in Oslo. They had the best buffet breakfast EVER. It was so yummy and it was included with the cost of the room. While we were at the hotel ... read more

My hair and clothes reek of cigarettes, the room is spinning and I really think I'm going to vomit... Flash back to college, Freshman year! Damn. So we got bullied into entering this damn contest at the bar. And since I felt like I was being a poop and dissapointing my friends I went a head and let myself get talked into this. I will admit we were lied to about the rules, and the game. So that sucked. Had I known the truth I would never have agreed. The contest was called the Hardman Contest. Basically its a drinking contest, with a little dirty Simon Says thrown in. We have some video, but Kelley taped a lot of crap that wasn't necessary and killed the camera's battery. The first thing we had to do was ... read more
