This was our last full day before flying home. We stopped at Kylemore Abbey which gave us some great photo opportunities. We drove through the countryside enjoying the scenery and we even had to stop for sheep which were being herded down the middle of the road. Our next stop was Cong, where the John Wayne classic "The Quiet Man" was filmed and is currently home to Ashford Castle. Ashford Castle, once owned by the Guinness Family now serves as a luxury hotel. ($500 USD per night with a two night minimum. Needless to say, we did not sleep here.) Winding down, we headed to the Cliffs of Moher for a great, windy view.... read more

We took my mum out for her birthday. We had dinner at the yummy Italian Wayne and I went to for my birthday and then went to the theatre. We saw the 39 Steps at the Mercury. The theatre was packed out! I really enjoyed the play, it was very very funny, and lots of amusing action. I would love to see the film (not funny apparently). ... read more

O.K. I have a scenario for you. I want you to imagine yourself in this situation. Now, free your mind and close your eyes (wait now you can't read. ok. open your eyes. shit, your eyes are closed, you don't know to open. My only means of commune are visual. We're stuck. You're just sitting there in your office with your eyes closed in front of the computer like an asshole, and I've got no means to rectify this. Unless of course you never listened to me and didn't close your eyes to begin with, in which case you're already an asshole. That is unless you're blind and have your eyes closed all the time, then I'm the asshole. (How do the blind use computers anyway? (Anyone know brail for sorry :: .: :. :: (spellcheck?) ... read more

Europe » Croatia » Dalmatia » Korcula May 20th 2008

Thursday 15 May 2008 Despite sleeping on the floor, we had a very restful night. The weather was quite warm, the carpet was soft and the Mediterranean Sea was flat. We awoke to a beautiful sunrise over the port of Dubrovnik where we had to leave the boat for Croatian Immigration. Once through, we were approached by a crowd of private accommodation providers. They were very polite but we had to decline because we were getting back on the boat to continue on north to Korcula. We sat on the port for about an hour admiring the view and the crystal clear water. Back on the boat, we continued for another 3 hours to the island of Korcula. Korcula is one of the largest of 1100 islands off the coast of Croatia. Once at the dock ... read more

Europe » France » Languedoc-Roussillon » Carcassonne May 20th 2008

Tuesday 20th May From our B & B we had a fairly long walk to the ancient city of Carcassonne. Along the way you can some magnificent views of the fortified town. You almost have to pinch yourself to realize that you are not in actually living in medieval times. It would've been a 20 min -30 min walk except that the last part of it was a very steep uphill slog. On arriving outside the main gate into the city Marion spotted the Carcassonne P'tit Train. This "train" just does a circuit of the town, and we decided that it would be much easier taking the train rather than trying to complete a circuit on foot. The walls are quite precipitous in a couple of places which meant downhill walks to get far enough away ... read more

Nimes and Pont Du Gard We found a lovely little campground in Nimes, Pont du Gard, France... Domaine de la Bastide; it was a bit tricky to find. We were lulled into easy finds in Spain, because we found a camping book that had GPS coordinates. We have not been so lucky in southeast France; we have some knowledge in Spanish, but are clueless in French. So the happy dumb-wanders just keep going. Actually we have found everything we wanted to find and are safe and sound...that is a good thing. We began our day waiting at the bus stop, just outside the campground, for the local bus to Nimes. The Romans claimed this land after the Celtic Tribes. What a wonderful surprise, built at the end of the 1st century AD, the Roman Amphitheatre is ... read more

The flight from KL was good. They allocated me the seat I requested. Not that it mattered as the plane was only two-thirds full. I had the window and aisle to myself which was pure luxury. Cabin crew were good and served me a glass of beer and wine with my meal. I took a sleeping pill which seemed to do the trick. Not sure how long I was asleep but I estimate 3-4 hours. Without that I would have been a basket case for the big day of connecting flights. When we touched down in Rome I was shocked to find it raining with a forecast top of fifteen. Why did I leave KL? I got through immigration in seconds. Hard to believe some pissy stamp on my passport allows me to roam Western Europe ... read more

Europe » Romania » Transilvania » Brasov » Brasov May 20th 2008

To be fair, before I started this trip I had no idea about Brasov or anything regarding what there could be to do here or in the area. That is the joy of hostels - somebody says something and you go. Interestingly enough, that means that you end up meeting the same people over and over again in the hostels, but that's a good time, too. Also, in the interests of full disclosure, I am not now, nor have I ever been a sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania. So, Brasov, great little town. It looks like it should look. It is also a great base of operations for going and seeing all of Transylvania, particularly the local castles and Sighisoara, Vlad Tepis's birthplace.
