Yesterday was our first official day--lectures in the morning, site visits in the afternoon, "cultural" dining (aka authentic Belgium food and beer) in the evening, which lasted through the night. The morning began with a healthy walk to the UK Research Office where our lecture is held. Our professor, Nigel Roome, holds several positions, but his most prestigious is the Daniel Janssen Chair in Corporate Social Responsibility at Solvay Business School, Free University of Brussels, Belgium. His lectures are engaging and he is very enthusiastic about the subject. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has really struck a chord with me and I'm very intrigued. What we're learning about here is how CSR differs between US companies (many laws) and European Union (EU) companies (many principles). Where Americans want to sue when they feel they have been treated ... read more

Europe is just awesome. I just think I'm so glad just to be out of the country. After about 18 hours of traveling through 2 stopovers, we made it to my cousin Ria's in Antwerp, Belgium. Ria and her daughter Evy picked us up from the airport, we dropped our stuff off, then it was off to try some Belgian beer (don't worry, it was slightly past noon). Of course, everything we tried was amazing. Then we met up with Evy's girlfriend and Ria's husband Ludo and went for some more drinks. We had a late lunch at this restaurant where the chef would prepare a small dish and put it on this conveyor belt to go around the little restaurant. It was similar to a baggage claim carousel in an airport (or maybe I'm just ... read more

Yesterday was pretty boring. I walked around and saw some of the local sights but it was so cold in the morning that it was hard to enjoy it. I then found a nice park and listened to my ipod for about an hour. The sun finally came out and I was no longer so cold! I shouldnt have planned so many days here in Geneva. The hostel isnt really a hostel. It has people of all ages staying here, even business men! I had already paid for it so I just decided to stay. I didnt reall meet anyone except this guy from Africa named Terry that wasnt that nice. In fact yesterday I was on the internet and one of Terrys roommates came over to me and asked me if I had any contact ... read more

Sorry for any spelling mistakes, but I'm still learning how to stumble my way across a European keyboard. It's getting better, but... still not great. So I've been in Belgium for just over a week now, and I've had an amazing time so far. I wish I could post some pictures right now, but my computer and the wireless router at Brianna's host families house are having some major compatibility issues (virus maybe?) therefore I can't put them up. As soon as I can, however, I will... because there are some good ones. Belgium is a beautiful country. So far I've been to Brussels, and Mons only, but I'm going to Gent on Thursday and possibly Bruges on Saturday (I was supposed to go today but there is a rail strike so thats now a no-go). ... read more

Hi Everyone! It's been a while... we keep passing by internet cafes, but the beach is so much more inviting...:P We have been pretty busy in the last few days. Last we wrote, we were enjoying Olympia- the next day was our big travel day to make it across the Peloponnese on our way to the rest of the islands. That was a looooong day, but it was definitely worth it. We woke up bright and early and made our way to the train station, which had a sign saying it opened at 7:30am. Well... according to the Greeks that means 8:00, which was also the time that the first train left. We had to rush to get on the train, but we made it just in time. We had a pretty nerve-wracking trip because nobody ... read more

We woke up in plenty of time for the bus at 7:15am, but again, the bus was a no-show. We decided instead to rent a vespa scooter for the day and try to find the U.S. Navy base near Souda, with the hope of sending some excess weight home. We did find the base, hidden away on the other side of the Chania airport, but unfortunately, they wouldn't let us on since we weren't on the access list. We continued on to Hania and strolled around the old Venetian harbor and gift shops, having capuccinos at the Teraza Cafe. The harbor is really picturesque. We ate lunch at a quaint taverna on the harbor called Kavouras. We decided to try their spacial, with a Greek salad, mousaka, and a dessert for two at 15 Euros. They ... read more

Dear followers, My coat is stained forever with grease, oil, and dirt. Not even the strongest Swedish washing machine could get it out. Proof positive of an adventure of a lifetime from this morning! Curious what caused my coat stains!? Try a 64 meter climb (some 210+ feet) to the VERY TIP TOP of an electric windmill! We lounged out on top to stare right in the face of the large blades (not moving though!) and were eye level with about twelve other windmills! Exhilirating!? Totally! The amazement that Peter, Dennis, Beth, and I experienced is beyond words. Our photos from the top look like they were Photo-Shopped! They'll be posted soon....once I get a hold of Beth's memory card!!! :) We're now in Halmstad after having finished the day with a fine presentation in Falkenberg ... read more
