So, I'm getting pretty homesick. For Hungary. It's made all the worse by the fact that I am in Hungary.
This isn't the Hungary that I'm homesick for, though. I was listening to some music from the 50s and 60s... Karady Katalin, Boros Ida, Ratonyi Robert... songs about Budapest, and home, and the homeland...
It's all gone. What happens you enslave a nation for 40 years, systematically breaking down every institution and belief and value, and then all of a sudden free it, and then expect it to rebuild itself like magic? What happens when you try to rebuild a nation without culture or faith?
You get a bitter populace, a corrupt and vile leadership, deep divisions over nothing, and the murder of a once-great national spirit. "The legendary Hungarian hospitality has dried up"... and that came from a Hungarian who's lived here 50 years.
I miss Hungary... but I've never been to Hungary. I'd like to go, but I don't think I'll ever get the chance.
