Great Britain, holds the history of once being the most powerful nation in the world. Although this status has long since passed, there are few areas of the country where evidence of this former glory are absent. Relics of an industrial past dot the landscape, and expansive stately homes display the profits reaped both at home and abroad.

Although famed for it's rain, the British climate is temperate, with mild winters and pleasant summers. The British countryside offers a taste of both the quaint and the unkempt, and provides opportunities for various outdoor activities such as hiking, climbing and pot-holing.

Britain's cities are vibrant and exciting, with long and diverse histories of development, historic buildings and stunning modern architecture.

Our trip down Memory Lane starts at "The Lawns" B&B in Woodstock, which served as our home base. A great little town with good restaurants and Pubs. I lived in Oxfordshire at the nearby RAF Base Upper Heyford (1972-1974) with the US Air Force. Also worked as a dining room waiter at the Weston Manor Hotel (1974) in the village of Weston-on-the-Green near Bicester. [View Full Entry]

Well, I'm in. Felt like the proverbial spare part a lot of the time, not wanting to touch anything in case the guy 100ft (yes, 100ft!) up the mast suddenly came crashing down to the deck. Did my fair share of grinding, which comes with the territory when you're built like a rugby player. How do you think that guy got up the mast? Learnt a bit about the water ballast system, and had a safety briefing. Found out where the 'triangle of death' is, and also discovered that the 'first aid kit' includes a body bag! Nice touch. The accommodation [View Full Entry]

Training!!! Europe » United Kingdom » England » Isle of Wight » Cowes
Well, what I thought was going to be a chilled day, meeting the skipper and crew for a look around the boat, followed by a pie and a pint, has turned into two days of sail training! Got to be at Cowes ready to set sail by 10am tomorrow, which meant a lot of running about for my dear old mum yesterday, collecting foul weather gear for me etc. Same again Sunday. Well, at least it'll show what I'm made of I guess. Fingers crossed I don't embarrass myself. [View Full Entry]

Baptism of Fire! Europe » United Kingdom » England » Isle of Wight » Cowes
Well, I've just signed up to help deliver a 60ft Volvo racing yacht from Cowes to the Canaries, non-stop. It'll either be the best 8-10 days of my life, or I'll never want to see another boat again as long as I live. Watch this space. [View Full Entry]

Day 2 Europe » United Kingdom » England » Greater London » London City
I have no idea what I wrote last night, I was delirious from lack of sleep! To finish off last night, I went back to my room to nap for an hour, then made my way to a pub for a quick bite. I looked for a traditional pub, but this area is so touristy, that it was tough. I finally found one about half a mile away. Had a chicken breast grilled with bacon and cheese, some clearly canned peas, and fries (chips) . . . a pint of Guiness and I was off to "Stones in His Pockets." It [View Full Entry]

What an increadible day! I can brely keep my eyes open right now and am looking forward to a quick nap after this. After flying for almost 16 hours I arrived at the airport and to my suprise got on the right train to downtown London. I got off the train at Victoria Station and decided to walk to my hostel. I had no idea where I was, where I was going, what direction to travel, or how far it was, but I felt like walking, so fully loaded I set off. I passed bukingham Oalace then strolled through St. James's [View Full Entry]

A Ka....  Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland
… is 1/3 of a Ford Focus. That is what Sam drove the two of us 830 miles in 4 days in. Destination: Blair Atholl Scotland. What is in Blair Atholl? A large castle, and some of Sam’s cousins who live in a rather posh house How we got to Blair Atholl: we rented the Ka and drove all the way to Crainlarich in one day. Because of two navigational errors it took 9hours. (it is not my fault that the entrances to the Motorways do not specify north or south, just the names of some random villages. We got a [View Full Entry]

The Welsh roads make even Kitchawan (for those of you not familiar with roller coaster road, it is narrow and curvy) wide. Add that to the fact that they drive on the wrong side of the road here... Anyways, i ended up spending Sat night in chester, which i quite liked. Everyone i met in chester was unbeleivably nice. When i asked the man selling train tickets how to take a bus where i needed to go, he paid for me to take a taxi. i stopped and loooked at my map when i went to eat and another man stopped [View Full Entry]

Kristen and I unwound in Cambridge with my family for a while and went to see some tennis at Wimbledon. We had some great times in London with my family and chilled in Cambridge and had a lovely time. After a few weeks Kristen went back to Arizona to prepare for moving to Colorado and spend time with her family and I spent the rest of my "year off" making the most of the free time: I spent a week in Ibiza which was beautiful - seeing the sunset at Caf・ Del Mar and mountain biking around the quiet parts of [View Full Entry]
