Arrived in London after our flight from Rio and stopover in Madrid. It was damned cold!! Sarah was waiting for us at the airport and it was great to see a familiar face after so long. It took us a while to find out way out of the airport as we put ourselves in Sarah's hands and, in typical Shazza style, she couldn't remember how she came to be where she had met us!!
Got the tube to Acton Town and got the tour of 'The Mansions'. Had our first meal in England, a big greasy burger with chips from Mark's, where we ended up eating our first three meals! I know, shocking...
Sarah and a bunch of the mansions crew took us out to The Redback, their local pub. The place was packed full of Aussies and Kiwis so we had a good night and ended up pretty trashed thanks to Sarah and her bloody snakebites! On Monday Sarah had the day off and we went into town to see some of the touristy stuff: Big Ben, The London Eye, The Themes, Tower Bridge, London Tower etc. etc. We had lunch at a pretty typical Brittish pub
which was good...
Later that week went back into the center without Sarah as she was crook. We took advantage of Sarah being sick to see a couple of the galaries taht she wasn't interested in seeing. Did the national gallery and the national portrait gallery and the Brittish Museum. These were all very good, I think we liked the Brittish Museum the best. We also saw a show at the West End that week, called Wicked. It was a prequal and sequal to the Wizard of Oz and was very good.
Friday that week we headed out in the rain to see Buckingham Palace. Was a pretty underwhelming sight, especially in the rain!! Saw a bit of the changing of the guards but the rain beat us in the end and we bailed. That night we went out with a bunch of them for one of the girls' birthdays. Had a great night, absolutely smashed it up. The bus ride home was bloody terrible, Yarnees was hanging onto a pole for dear life, we were seriously worried she was gonna fall out the door!! Most of the next day was pure recovery. Sunday had big plans to
First Night in London
Who the hell are these people? go to the famous sunday drinking session at 'The Church' but sort of missed it and ended up BBQ'ing and getting very drunk, again, at the mansions. Good weekend.
On Monday we (T and I) hired a little Ford Focus and headed off North to see some sights, generally headed toward Scotland. We stopped in Cambridge to see some of the Universities and had a good look around there. After we left Cambridge we drove thru some really pretty countryside, including Robin Hood country!! We made it as far north as York that night and stopped at a hostel for the night. Up early the next mornig we checked out the local sites in York and then headed for Edinborough. The drive up there was also really nice. We got to Edinborough late and had a quiet one at the hostel. In the morning we jumped in the car and went to see some the Roslyn Chapel and Castle which feature in The Da Vinci Code. Was beutiful countryside and the church and castle were very cool. Drove back to Edinborough and had a quick look at Edinborough Caste. Pretty amazing castle right in the middle of the city.
First Day in London
It's bloody cold again... Went to a local bar called 'Clever Dicks' for a couple pints and some haggis and found, to our suprise, that haggis ain't too bad!
On Thursday we headed back to London, was a big drive to do in a day and after battling with London traffic for the last 2 hrs of the trip we were exhausted and hit the sack pretty early. Got up the next morning and scooped up Carly and Sarah and headed off towards Brighton for the Easter long weekend. The drive that should have taken us about an hour and a half ended up taking almost five hours and when we arrived we were told the campsite was full. AAArgghh! Decided to head to Seaford, where some other kids from the Mansions were heading, to try for a campsite there. The campsite was pretty shabby there and we were lucky to even have a tent as we only packed the tentpoles after Johnny, one of Sarah's mates, found them just as we were walking out the door....''Oi, you guys might need these!''. Anyway, at least we had found a place, although it was cold and we spent most of the night in the
car.
Next day we took off to see Dover Castle which was not that great, we wandered around a bit but got pretty bored so we all decided that we would head across the country towards Bath. Didn't quite make it and spent the night in a campsite in Ashurst, near Southampton. We had a pretty good night athlough the party police came around before midnight and made us put the fire out which pretty much killed the night. We decided to sleep in the car as were all cold last night. Four adults sleeping in a Ford Focus, not a good idea!!
Got up early Sunday and left. Headed to Bath via Stonehenge. Stonehenge was very cool to see although we didn't pay to go in as we had just as good a view from the road. Bath was great and we spent an hour and half in one of the baths there which was very relaxing. Had lunch there and headed back to London. The next day in London was a holiday and we decided to BBQ. Was really warm and sunny out and everyone ended up smashed again! Feel sorry for the poor buggers that
worked on Tuesday! On Tuesday night a bunch of us from Flat 1 went out to Brick Lane for a curry. Was one of the best curries I ever had and Tyahnne even got into the vindaloo!! She wasn't the biggest fan but we both loved the rest.
Thats about it, Wednesday we said goodbyes and flew out to Paris!! We had a brilliant time in London, met some great people and, although most of it is a blur, we have some great memories from there.
