Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Ross and the boys
6th August We are now in Ireland and what a beautiful place this is. The boys are extremely happy. Paddy takes us on adventures to the beach - swimming and gathering kaimoana. When we come home Barbara has the table laden with food. Shepherd Pie, tomato soup, sausages, jam tarts, treacle tarts, roast chicken with all the trimmings and don’t forget the mussels says Blake. They’re at a gaelic football training at the moment. Paddy and Barbara are down the road trying to get the escaped donkeys home. Since our last blob we have spent more time in Scotland, travelled to [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone, yes I am still alive and yes I'm still cycling (well not right at this very moment, that really would take multi-tasking to a new level!) Day 7, Saturday 9th August: Saltford to Cardiff 88.69 miles 10.5mph 8 hours 24 mins cycling time So, where did I leave you last? Oh yes, well the tummy is behaving itself again, just goes to show the stress I'm putting my body under though (bring on the sympathy). A night at home helped no end although didn't enjoy the early start to get back to Saltford again, as I'm sure Dad didn't [View Full Entry]

I got back to London last night after probably one of the best weekends of my life in terms of outdoor adventure and scenery. Rachel, Jordan, Jackie, and I went hiking, surfing, and coasteering. According to dictionary.com, coasteering is a physical activity that encompasses movement along the intertidal zone of a rocky coastline on foot or by swimming, without the aid of boats, surf boards or other craft and may include Climbing, scrambling, sea level traversing, jumping and diving. And yes, it did include all of those. We took a bus to Pembrokeshire, which is in the southwestern part of [View Full Entry]

We finally got round to uploading the pictures of the BBQ in Koln on the 16th June and the Irish Pub in Darmstadt on the 23rd June. You can see the Koln BBQ and also the "last supper" (until Ozzy's next leaving do anyway) in Luigis here: Koln leaving do on Smugmug and the Darmstadt ones here: Darmstadt leaving do. Both were great evenings, we had a fab time so thanks everyone for giving us such a great send off! Incidentally [View Full Entry]

It was a cold long weekend and all we wanted was to see the Cheese Rolling Competition, so we decided to go to Wales for the weekend and on the way back stop in Gloucesteshire, where the competition happens every year. Wales is a beautiful country with it's beaches and quirky little villages and we had a great time. It was very interesting, to say the least, to go horse riding on the beach. The horses were old and had a big lack of motivation and when we were told to take the horses into the water the poor things really [View Full Entry]

I know it has been a long time since I've updated, but as of TODAY I am officially finished with school for the semester. Now that I'm done with all of my final papers and don't want to leave my room since it's raining (big surprise), I finally have a little bit of time to share what I've been up to in the past few months. This trip to Wales was the first trip I took after getting settled in London, It's taken so long to write a blog entry about it because I've been waiting for the photos from [View Full Entry]

Girls getaway to rest, relax and have fun! Nels, Amy, Lisa and I have just spent a wonderful weekend away at Lisa’s family’s brand new log cabin, in some tiny Welsh village, near St Davids (UK’s smallest city!). I’ve had such an expectancy for this weekend, and it was more then met. On Saturday we did a lovely long coastal walk, stopping at the little bays and beaches, skimming stones and having some unhurried DMC’s, while “aweing” at the beauty around us. That night while spending time with God and praying for each other, He arrived in a way that [View Full Entry]

February 2007 Hello Bo & Dud, February already!! I can see that the next few months are going to zip past leading up to our great adventure. Half term came around very quickly and so we had our first outing of the year to North Wales. Fortunately, we were able to get away before the snow brought things to a halt in Derbyshire. We had a sprinkle of snow, some dull days and a little rain, but a couple of sunny days which more than compensated. I’ve not visited North Wales for more years than I care to remember. I spend [View Full Entry]

Our good friend Nick got married to Vicky on Saturday 6th May 2006 in his home 'city' of St Davids in Pembrokeshire, Wales. We drove down on Friday, we left home at 10 and got there at just after 2pm. We checked in to our b&b and then walked around the smallest city in the UK. St Davids has a cathedral which gives it the status of city - but it is really a tiny little place - a bit more like a village! We could walk easily from our b&b, The Waterings, to the cathedral where they were going to [View Full Entry]
