Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Working for an eternity Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
The contract on my house expires on the 10th May 2006, I've calculated that's 55 working days from now. I've put that into perspective for myself: 55 times I will curse my phone’s alarm then press snooze 105 incidents of dropping my £1.05 fare into the exact change only machine on the bus 153 angered moments of pressing Alt-F4 to get Windows 2000 to respond 220 bad white coffees consumed from the machine (mine’s a 12 strong if you’re asking) >500 corporate announcement emails detailing the latest J&J acquisition Then I can get the plan together, get my stuff t [View Full Entry]

A Castle and some Rugby Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Last weekend Craig, Aldo and I trained it up to Cardiff and met Cathy who flew in from Dublin. Saturday morning was spent visiting Cardiff Castle. I'm a sucker for a castle. In Australia buildings from the 70s get added to the historic building register so anything that predates laminex and brown bricks is cool in my books. There was a moat; need I say more? For some reason there often seems to be peacocks in the grounds of British historic buildings and that day we were treated to a full feather lifting, booty shaking mating display from one of the [View Full Entry]

I'm sorry I love this, its a three way pun. It's great
So, as it turns out, I am an imbecile of the highest order. I will hear no complaints, this is an indisputable fact. While my trip is not exactly in danger, there are certainly some complications. Handling finances abroad can be a tricky procedure, particularly so if something gets stolen. The idea then, is to spread the risk. To have several backup options if something goes wrong. My cunning plan was to have three accounts (with nationwide who offer no commission on overseas withdrawals) that were connected online, in the case of theft I could just cancel the appropriate card and [View Full Entry]

Well it was off to Cardiff on Friday night to our home away from home. This weekend was a bit special because not only did we get to see the mighty All Blacks play again but even more special was the chance to see little Jake, John and Kim's first. It is really nice having family so close to us and it does make it easier when we feel a little homesick. Cardiff was certainly rocking by the time we arrived and there was certainly a sea of black in the capial of Wales. it looked like a lot more kiwi's [View Full Entry]

Well................What better way to celebrate my quarter century. A weekend in Cardiff, watching the All Blacks play the Welsh (Im half Welsh) with 75,000 others, chilling with James, Anna, Russ and my Welsh cousin John Paul and his wife Kim. The weekend was made all the better by the fact that we wasted the Welsh which made for an awesome all-nighter that evening. The day started with a 8am bus trip to Cardiff - I meet up with a couple of dudes who I went to primary scool with - Crazy- but cool. Then we had 5 hours till kick off [View Full Entry]

Sorry, I should have put a shirt on - but how can you on a day like this?
Hey sportsfans I know its been a while since my last post but to be honest not a lot has happened - well actually heaps has happened its just that they are lots of little things and not 1 particular trip worth writing about. It all started with a trip to Bournemouth, which is down on the south coast near Southampton and the Isle of Wight. Cracker of a spot down there - we hit it on the perfect weekend. Met up with Niki (the old receptionist from Colliers when I was working in Chch), and hit the town. Bournemouth is [View Full Entry]

Site Seeing... Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Today my tour guide Adam was well prepared and well organised and had planned a fun filled day showing off Welsh history. Adam's parents suggested that we take an umbrella to which I declined saying that I had faith that the weather would hold out (even though Adam had previously told me that we were expecting 4 days of heavy rain). First stop was Caerleon Roman Fortress & Baths. Caerleon is one of Europe's most fascinating and revealing Roman sites. To the Romans the town was known as Isca. At Caerleon, the Romans created not just a military camp but an [View Full Entry]

On to Wales... Europe » United Kingdom » Wales » Cardiff
Managed the tube and train ride through to Cardiff which was a pretty good trip, only took 2 hours from Paddington to Cardiff. After arriving I managed to pick the wrong side of the station to wait for Adam on! But we managed to sort it all out in the end! Adam took on the role of tour guide and took me to our first of many sites, Big Pit which isn't too far from Adam's family home. Big Pit was a working coalmine until it closed in 1980. Then in 1983 it became a museum of the South Wales mining [View Full Entry]

View from Cardiff Castle Tower

Friday night, when Judd and I tried to go to Cardiff Bay to find that jazz club (a 40 miniute walk), we found it to have been closed for a month due to repairs, so we ate dinner at this fancy pizza place and walked back. The next day we went to Caerphilly Castle (20 minute train ride from Cardiff), which was really cool. They pretty much let us go anywhere in the castle we could get to that was safe. Unlike some of the previous castles we have been to, like Neushwanstein and even Cardiff castle in some instances (it [View Full Entry]
