Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

Claire, Lottie, and Merson at Cardiff Castle
Monday morning, I recovered a little from the lovely but busy weekend in the Cotswolds and prepared for my trip to Wales. Because of London's large size, I walked to the train, then took a train, two different tubes and another train to meet up with Claire, my old co-counselor from KSA, who was going to drive us both to Lottie (another KSA pal) who comes from Cardiff, the capital of Wales. After a quick stop at her house in Stokes Pogie (just fun to say that town), we were on our way in the beamer, cruising the M4 for 2 [View Full Entry]

Well I am here in Cardiff, Wales and today has been the coolest day since we arrived here at the UK. Today has been in the 80's, while the rest of the week it has been in the high 90's. I have to admit I miss Ireland's weather!! We started off our trip in Bath and now we are in Wales. On Friday we leave for Oxford and will be there for two days before moving on to our next location again. We are doing a lot of writing (hense the Travel Writing course) and I think most of us are [View Full Entry]

Experiencing Cardiff from Colum Road Tuesday, July 4th - Friday, July 7th Beads of sweat continue to roll down the sides of my round face, I wipe them away with my hand and then onto my jeans. One of the reasons why I came to the United Kingdom for the summer was to escape the heat that is all too common for Chicago, but my group and I have found ourselves in the middle of biggest heat wave that Wales has had in the past three years. After asking for directions twice and walking for a good half hour we finally [View Full Entry]

There she is. Shutdown for the final time today. Heartbreaking. No more Windows 2000, Oracle or Documentum action.
So here it is, the final day at MegaLab USA. I can barely believe it's actually come round and in just over two weeks we'll be leaving the familiarity of the UK jetting off to sunny Malaga. It seems like such a short time ago that it was the deepest bowels of winter when on some days I couldn't have wanted to leave more. Alice is right that we got the whole timing the wrong way round, we should have worked through the summer here then escaped just before the winter but it is the way it is. It's been a [View Full Entry]

Cardiff Castle in Wales
Hello all, I don’t know why it surprised me that people in Wales would speak Welsh. Surprised at how often I heard it. All street signs are in both Welsh and English. Cardiff is a very modern city. Many of the narrow alleys have been turned into pedestrian only areas with trendy little shops. Did a couple of touristy things and glad that I did. First visit was to Cardiff Castle. It is more than 2,000 years old—originally Roman. It became the home of the Welsh royal family and was used as a private home until 1947 when it was given [View Full Entry]

The contract on my house expires on the 10th May 2006, I've calculated that's 55 working days from now. I've put that into perspective for myself: 55 times I will curse my phone’s alarm then press snooze 105 incidents of dropping my £1.05 fare into the exact change only machine on the bus 153 angered moments of pressing Alt-F4 to get Windows 2000 to respond 220 bad white coffees consumed from the machine (mine’s a 12 strong if you’re asking) >500 corporate announcement emails detailing the latest J&J acquisition Then I can get the plan together, get my stuff t [View Full Entry]
