After three years in the planning and rescheduling 4 times, the day has finally arrived. We are on our way to Ireland and Scotland. Covid has made this trip the most rescheduled trip ever, including our recent trip to New Mexico. Even though this trip was fully planed in May of 2020, over the last two years the dates have changed, things are not open because of Covid, then back open, timed entry then no timed entry. The last two months we spent a great deal of time firming up reservations, and rearranging days so that we could do everything we wanted to do. So, here we are, sitting in the Polaris lounge after a relaxing train ride from Providence to Newark Liberty Airport. We could have flown out of Providence but then the planes are ... read more

We got the phone call as you do when you have a house on the market. Mr and Mrs Doncaster are having a day out on Sunday. They have a few houses they want to see. Can they visit yours? Not what we want when we are deep in the valleys. They can come next week we say. That was the last we heard from them. A more important task for us was to try to negotiate the capital. Cardiff - we pondered on how on earth it ended up as capital of Wales? More from the point that we were North Walians and we cannot understand why it is so far away from us at the North. Why wasn't the capital somewhere in the middle of the country? We knew the reasons we just didn't ... read more

Off to the great rugby nation Wales today, it rained of course, it had to happen, with virtually no rain on the trip so far it was only a matter of time. Using the main motorway for the first time this trip it took little time to reach the mighty Severn River, coming around this bend we saw this huge bridge structure and looking to the right we saw its twin some 7-8 miles up river. to wales just to say we had been there but we found this fantastic old castle call Caerphilly Castle, built around 1300 originally to defend Wales from the hordes from Scotland and England but was never really put to the test as around 1644 during the Civil war between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists they went and gave up and ... read more

Hi Friends and Family! Today, we left Cardiff in order to get to our next destination: The Brecons! As many of you know, I am a very great lover of using local transport however, in coming to Wales, I chose to go to small obscure places in the middle of no-where and thereby reducing the possibilities of actually getting there! Especially on the weekends. In one hostel in the West of Wales, the owners told me that the only way to get there from the Brecons is to either take the ferry going to Ireland or go all the way back to England and take a train in the opposite direction! So since (with an 8 year old boy and only three weeks to work with) we decided to.....gulp! Hire a car! I booked on-line with ... read more

In our series of day trips out of cardiff we took a trip to Caerphilly castle. Wales has one of the highest concentrations of castles of anywhere in the world and they make a good day trip out of the city. So 4 of us from work decided to make the trip to see Caerphilly castle. The castle itself is a massive place and when it was built it is supposed to have been the best fortified castle in the world. The castle has been doing its own thing for centuries and fell into such bad disrepair that it was nearly destroyed, however it has been gradually restored and is now a popular place for tourists to visit. The castle itself however is not very comfortable and was only used as a fort not as a ... read more

Walking I’m just back from a very interesting weekend in Wales. I walked in the mountains and explored the valleys. I went with my company’s walking club. I’ve never been away with them before so everyone was a stranger. The club had hired a bunkhouse in the village of Talybont-on-Usk to the north of the Brecon Beacons National Park. I decided to take Monday off work in addition to the weekend to go and explore “The Valleys” of South Wales, an area which I do not know, but have a slight connection to. The journey from London was a long one in driving rain, punctuated by a long detour past a blocked road on the way to Abergavenny following a local, driving fast along the narrow roads. But I arrived ten minutes before closing time! The ... read more
