Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

The Waterloo bridge at Betws-y-Coed
The crag, the jets, and the burial chamber. 2009, Oct 21st Well, this will be my final full day in Betws-y-Coed. I booked a room in Conwy for Thursday night. I had hoped to book a place for two nights but apparently Conwy is having some kind of food festival so all I could get was the one night. Rather then relocate within Conwy I will likely move on to someplace further south so as to position myself more continentally for the final part of this trip which currently is in Greenwich. I did a single short walk for this day [View Full Entry]

All plans execute as planed. Right? 2009, Oct 19th and 20th Well, I had planned to pick up the Dee Way in Chester and follow it to Bala. Oddly enough though I can’t seem to find anyone who knows anything about the Dee Way path. Nothing in the various tourists information centers nor could I find any markers on the Dee river or Canals. I guess this is the difference between a national trail and a more regional one that is fairly new. With no real way to identify how to proceed and having no fixed plans I decided to travel [View Full Entry]

The Roma Christmas was exciting again this year. The family congregations were spread over a few days and we indulged in more turkey, pudding and yummy goodies than required. We had Christmas day in London and then another gathering in Birmingham on Boxing Day. We have never indulged in so much kareoke in my life than in that one night alone! But it was fun for the kids and the 'grown ups' all singing along together, letting our hair down and dancing the night away. The occasional song brought a tear to the eye (not sure if it was the choice [View Full Entry]

Beautiful Betws-y-Coed, Wales

...and we were off for another browse, this time to Wales - North Wales, UK! For some reason, we all have always been a fan of Last Minute adventures and planning for this trip was no different any of the previous ones. Alike, previous trips I was struggling to get good deals for accomodation and transportation.. Without going off the tangent, we decided to explore North Wales during Christmas vacation this year (2008), 'Decision was made 5 days prior to travel' without realizing this year's Christmas break is of 4 days at a stretch and it could be difficult to make [View Full Entry]

The Miners Track
The Miners Track
Steve, Sara, Rach and Marc
By now we were really weary and wondering whether our legs would actually get us up Snowdon at all. It hurt to walk, it hurt to sit and we actually thought our legs would seize up all together at one point. Here we met with Sara and Austin who grew up in North Wales and are dedicated climbers with lots of local knowledge and expertise. Also Marc's great friend Steve who had previously managed the 3 Peaks in 24 hours! With three sets of fresh legs to spur us on off we went. We went up the Miners track and came [View Full Entry]

Another misty and wet summit!
Gorgeous North Wales

Tucked away in amongst the Snowdon mountain range lies a purpose built mountain-biking trail. There isn't that much to say as I feel the pictures say it all. The ride is about 17 - 18 miles and does have several technical sections where care should be taken. Alot of the trails have semi-bedded rocks, so falling here would be painful. Don't let this put you off, with a good mountain-bike you probably wouldn't notice most of them. It's a great ride and taken at a steady pace should take around 3 hours max. If your after a peaceful ride, no traffic [View Full Entry]

Our hotel
Oi! What a gorgeous weekend! Away from the city and into some breathing space! We could not have asked for better weather as if we had custom ordered it. I am speechless. It has taken us this long to get our tongues back and get this thing written after being surrounded by such natural beauty. Even our bed-and-breakfast style hotel, Ty Gwyn ("The White House"), was wonderful--soft cushy bed in a large room (even en suite), and delicious food served in a cozy dining room. And homemade vanilla bean ice cream (I know hand-churned when I taste it!) Our only regret [View Full Entry]
