Cawdor Castle and spending a night in Carbisdale Castle
Published: July 1st 2009Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale CastleIt was light very early again today, which was just as well as we needed to get up a bit earlier. After breakfast at the hostel, we packed up the car and heading North up the road. A few minutes later, we turned around and headed back after realizing we had left all our food on the kitchen counter ! Our second attempt was more successful and we were soon passing through downtown Inverness, on our way to Cawdor Castle. Cawdor Castle is linked fictionally though Shakespeare's Macbeth when Macbeth is made “Thane of Cawdor”. Though there is no historical link to the event that the play is based on, I am eager to see the Castle that serves as some of this plays setting. The Castle is well maintained as is still used as a ... read more
Culrain - Carbisdale Castle
Published: March 15th 2007Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale CastleAfter Stirling, we made our way past the Scottish midlands and through the highlands to Culrain. The jagged small mountains were gorgeous - I think Ross' favorite scenery so far. I think people were realizing why Scotland is my favorite place on earth :). We saw some elk, but had no Scottish Highland cattle sightings just yet. It was really cool to go more North than I had been, and it seemed to just get prettier. Sadly it got dark before we reached our destination for the night: Carbisdale Castle. It truely was the best and neatest hostel I had ever stayed in. I LOVE castles :) :) :). It was so fun to explore the castle that night - through narrow hallways and up and down stairs. The library had many interesting books, some ... read more
Scottish Highlands
Published: March 9th 2006Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale CastleHello everyone Its really hard to beleive that I have been over here for almost 2 months now- WOW. Over the past 2 weeks I have been up north in the highlands on 2 seperate occasions. 1. Skiing: I'm sure many of you probably had no idea that there was even enough snow up here to ski- well dont worry becuase I didnt know that until 2 weeks ago either. I met a Scottish girl (Ruth) in one of my classes and she kept talking about skiing in the highlands. When she found out that I knew how to ski she invited me to go with her and her boyfriend for the day. So I invited a friend to come with us and we took the 1.5 hour drive upto a place called Glencoe. The drive ... read more
Over the hills and through the woods to Scotland...
Published: October 26th 2005Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale CastleSorry it took me so long to update my blog but here I am to inform you all of my adventures in the far north of the UK. I returned to my flat at around 8:30am on Monday after a torturous 13-hour bus ride. For those of you that don’t know, I went to the highlands of Scotland. We stayed in a castle that was donated to the Scottish Youth Hostel Association. The castle was said to have a “haunted” room but we didn’t get to stay in it. Scotland was so beautiful! It was so peaceful and calm. The people there were really kind and laid back. We only visited four small towns, well one was a bit larger than the rest but not too much bigger. We had a four-hour wait in Inverness for ... read more
A Haggis Bus, a Battlefield, an Ancient Graveyard and a Genuine B&B Castle
Published: February 6th 2006Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale Castle24th August 2005 Sutherland, Scottish Highlands. Day 1 of Skye High Haggis Tour. I left Edinburgh this morning with about twenty other holiday-makers, all bound for the highlands of Scotland and adventures untold (and undoubtedly pre-packaged). We passed the apparently famous Forth Rail and Road Bridges on our way north towards Fythe, stopped briefly in a whiskey distillery outside Pitlochry, then continued northward to Killiecrankie, which I just love to say in a faux-Scots brogue. Kee-li-crrrahnki. At some point during the morning we were cheerfully manipulated into playing a kind of speed-dating game where the people in aisle seats moved systematically along the bus and we each had about three minutes to converse. It was actually quite a laugh, but damned if many of their stories stuck with me. In a stroke of brilliant luck, we ... read more
Castle hopping.
Published: February 9th 2006Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Sutherland » Carbisdale CastleMikey is shot down Rachel is seeing someone Drowning in his tears. I didn’t realize Dee was in town last night! I quickly said hello to her on her bus and almost got “trapped.” Bummer, I didn’t realize she was in the Isle of Skye because it would have been cool to hang out one more time. Oh well! Took off about 9AM and went for a grocery stop. We’re currently heading off to another castle after a quick brekkie stop at the Murchison Memorial. A castle stop at Eilean Donan Castle. The Macray’s are still living in the castle but they have tours running through the castle - dining room and bedrooms - and it is quite nicely decorated. The kitchen was pretty cool and creepy at the same time. Cool in the sense that ... read more
