Background: Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe. A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to bickering over the peace process.

We ended up in Edinburgh after my last blog. When we arrived we went to our hotel and rested for a bit. We then made our way up to the Royal Mile, which is the road that connects Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood House, the palace currently used by the Queen on visits to Edinburgh. Both attractions are available for tours and I would highly recommend them. In between both attractions are many pubs, restaurants and other stores, generally guided for tourists, although you can find some locals. We walked up and down both ends of the Mile before my parents were [View Full Entry]

Our full day of sight seeing on the Coach today was enjoyable (sitting). Our first stop was the town of Aberfoyle where the Scottish Wool Mill shop does a brisk business. I bought 2 wool plad scarves for myself. Our guide on the coach gave us lots of historic background while we viewed scenery that was great. We ate our box lunches at lovely senic David Marshall Park. A cottage there (perhaps the caretaker's ?) had a beautiful garden that was carefully tended. I couldn't resist taking some pictures. Our next stop was Stirling - the town and the castle. Wednesday 8th July More Scottish castles and monuments and a unique piece of machinery After a day of staying in the city yesterday we decided to take a road trip today and head for Stirling to take in the castle and William Wallace memorial with a stop at Falkirk on the way. We had moved RR back to a parking space across the road from the flat that became free after 5.30pm yesterday but we still had to be alert by 8.30am this morning to put some money in the meter before the wardens started their round. And again as I went [View Full Entry]

On a random friday Andrew called me up and asked me to meet all the guys in Stirling the next day. Andrew promised me that there would be great sites and an amazing castle.....so obviously I went. It was really fun to see the guys again after sooo long and I got to meet Damon's friends from SB: Dan, Alex and Courtney. We first went to the William Wallace monument. There is quite a hike up to the monument and quite a hike to reach the top of the monument. The monument was basically a tower with rooms that explained what [View Full Entry]

So, I didn't sleep last night. At all. I read almost an entire book that mom sent with me and called Jay a few times. I tossed and turned a bit and then gave up on sleeping. So, now it is 7:22 Thursday night and the last night I slept was Monday night. I am a bit delirious, but doing ok. I went to school today, on no sleep, and met almost all of my "pupils". This made me very excited because they are all, at this point, just so cute and interesting. They really do not seem much different from [View Full Entry]

Hi everyone! So, I have safely arrived in Scotland. The flight was long and I didn't sleep at all. It was nice and quiet though, which was nice considering there was a 5 year old boy in front of me. I watched episodes of The Office and Two and a Half Men on the headrest and the movie Definitely, Maybe, which was really cute. I also was able to see my plane track across the Atlantic on a map on the headrest. I watched the sunrise out of my window, and I swear you can see the curve of the Earth [View Full Entry]

Well, long day of travel, but great scenery in Scotland. We were up at 6:30 and off to the airport by the city bus for our flight to Liverpool, England. Got in at about 10:30 and got our rental car at Hertz. They screwed us over, though, by charging us an extra $200 that what we have on our email confirmation--and not for insurance or anything, just the price. Whatever. Anyway, we did not make the drive over to Bangor, Wales--just not enough time even though it was not too far out of the way. We hit the road to go [View Full Entry]
